I just got my new dell xps 13 a few hours ago. My d3100 docking station and Asus MX279H monitor came yesterday, so I went ahead and hooked them up to my old Toshiba laptop. Everything seemed to work very well. When I connected my new xps, I noticed that the monitor did not look as crisp as before. For example, the text from my bookmarks on the top of the google chrome screen fuzzy or blurry. I have both the laptop and monitor resolutions set to 1920x1080. One thing that does seem to make a little difference is when I set the size of the text on both monitors to 100%. However, this makes the external monitor look better, but the xps look extremely small. The xps needs to be around 150% I believe. I'm very new to docking stations and external monitors, so am I doing something wrong? Also, watching youtube videos in 1080p on the monitor doesn't look as good as I thought it would. Again, not as crisp as it should be.

How are you connecting the monitor to your docking station? HDMI cable?

On a related note, the reason that text will look blurry is for one of two reasons:

    1) You need to make sure that your resolution setting is 1920x1080, which is the native resolution of your Asus MX279H monitor.

    2) Or, the problem is DPI scaling. Some applications are not written to properly support Windows DPI scaling. So when you make text look larger than 100%, those applications do not properly adjust how they draw text to accomodate that. Google Chrome is (was) one of the notorious offenders of this.

You can always try disabling resolution scaling for a specific application. Right-click on the application shortcut (or EXE). Go to Properties --> Compatibility. Check the box for "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings". That should allow that one specific application to run at 100% text size, while you keep the general global Windows font scaling setting to 125% or 150%.

The monitor is connected to the docking station by HDMI. I have the resolution set to 1920x1080. The problem may have been present last night with my toshiba laptop, but I didn't notice it if it was.

Do the disable dpi scaling setting I mentioned.

Also, reboot the laptop after you've plugged it in to the docking station. A lot of display drivers (especially Intel) do not properly handle text and icon sizing after you plug on a display device for the first time. Rebooting (with that external display connected) is a workaround to that.

Yes. I recently upgraded my old laptop to Windows 10 and my xps shipped with Windows 10. I tried disabling dpi on chrome and didn't notice any change. Also tried rebooting.
So far, it seems to only be chrome itself, like the bookmarks bar and settings menu. The text in the actual web page doesn't seem to be affected. The text in the windows start menu also looks very clear. I also noticed that even on the xps, the text on the chrome menu and bookmarks bar seems hazy. As I mentioned before, scaling the xps down to 100% instead of 150% seems to help the monitor's clarity. However, it makes the xps almost unusable.

For anyone who is wondering or experiencing the same issues, I finally got it to work. I disabled the DPI setting as kent1146 mentioned, but then set a custom scale for all items on both the monitor and the laptop to 150% in the advanced display options. I don't know why it didn't fix it when I tried this the first time in the regular display options. Perhaps because I was scaling the xps to 150% and the monitor to 100%. Now they are both at 150%. Anyway, thanks for all the help. Now my monitor and laptop are very clear, which makes me very excited and happy with my setup!
