Last week, I think it was last week, I did some Windows updates. Restarted. Came up with Windows Failed To Start.

So then yesterday I was uninstalling some games that I haven't played in awhile. Defraged after that. Restarted my computer. And it happened again Windows Failed To Start. Put my windows cd in. Got into Windows. After everything was loaded, I decided to restart again. Never uninstalled anything or deleted anything this time. Restarted. Windows Failed To Start. is going on. So I took out my 2 320GB hdd's out and put in the 250GB that came with the laptop. Restarted fine on the 1st and 2nd restart. Then on the 3rd Windows Failed To Start. This is really starting to me off. Spend $2500 on this thing, and after 3 months of having it, it's doing this.

So then after swearing and everything at this thing, I put back in both of my 320GB and backuped everything. I formatted. After everything was done. I setup windows and all the stuff. It restarted itself. And guess what Windows Failed To Start. I have never seen anything be so stupid in my life. Any guess on to what is happening. And if I send it to Dell to get it fixed, i'll tell them just to keep it.

Could be a major hardware issue if both HDDs failed to boot Windows =/...what Windows are you using? Have you messed with the insides of your system at all? Cables, cards, buses?

Google "Windows Failed To Start", many many people have had this problem (including me).

Did you install all the updates when you reinstalled Windows? I've had a WU or a group of them give me BSODs like none other. I take it Safe Mode doesn't help?

    Cheers.

    I'm using Windows Vista Premium.

The only thing I have messed with, was taking off the cover to get to the hard drives to change them around.

I couldn't get into Windows after I reinstalled. After I setup it and whatnot, it restarted and Windows Failed To Start.

Like I said in the 1st post, if I have to send it in to Dell to get it fixed, i'll tell them to keep it and shove it up their asses. I have never seen anything like this before. It's just retarded.

But I did have a similar problem that I had with my last laptop too. It also had Vista on it. But I only got Windows Failed To Start once, and after that BSOD atleast 2-3 times a day. Maybe it's Vista itself, I don't know but on my other computer I have at home which I use for just the basics no gaming or anything. I have had it since 03, and it's 09 now, and not once have I gotten a BSOD or Windows Failed To Start. Also, I have not formatted it once since I bought it. It also has Windows XP on it.

I ran some windows update (minus Vista SP1) and I'm having the same issue.

Are you getting this exact message?

windows failed to start a recent hardware or software change might be the cause

if windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power has interrupted during startup, choose start windows normally.

    Launch startup repair

    Start windows normally

Description: fix problems that are preventing windows from starting.

Monkey, cool down... we know this is very frustrating... But you need to be more patient and descriptive on what you did and what is happening..

1st.. Did you try to recover from system restore when this started to happened? Saved me many times of headaches.

2nd.. When you said " I setup windows and all the stuff" what exactly did you install, the OS, any patches (e.g. SP1), did you install the new drivers, etc? OS reinstallation usually takes a number of reboots, what did you install before this failed to start happened? Where did you got your drivers or "other stuff" from?

btw what OS do you have 32 or 64 bit?

There's a HW test in my 1530, not sure in 1730 if its available, i think you need to press f5 or f12 to see the option during startup (just press either one of them) and execute the HW test. See if anything is fails the test.

You need to be patient sometimes on this kind of things. And dont resort to format and OS reinstallations quickly.. usually this should be the last resort if everything fails. I once saw a post in HP forum here in NBR, due to high cpu utilization, the guy reinstalled his whole OS...

Nope. Safe mode does not boot, system restore was off, and last known configuration did not work.
