UPDATE: my initial problem was Autorun, but I've edited the post to include other issues I'm having. Too bad I cannot edit the thread title. Sorry about that.
Hi all,
So far I've had my 1645 for a few days and it's been great. I haven't put it through its paces, but it's run smoothly and quickly and handled everything I've thrown at it so far. Then again, I'm still in the process of installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, so not much software has really been put on it since I wiped the hard disk.
There's a few minor issues I've had thus far, both of them are software/driver related.
1) My XPS 16 is supposed to have the Sony Optiarc BluRay BD-ROM drive (Dell calls it the " Module,Dvd +/-rw And Bd-rom M1640,Sony Nec Optiarc Inc."). I haven't tested it since I don't have any Bluray movies, but I took Dell's word for it. however, Windows 7 (since doing a fresh install) reports this drive as
" HL-DT-ST_DVDRWBD_CA10N__________________A110____"
(copied directly from the drive's own properties page)
I wanted to confirm that this is the BD-ROM drive? I read elsewhere of another drive, going by the model BC-5600S, which is what I thought I would be getting. Any insight if the BD-ROM drive had been upgraded from the BC-5600S model? Or am I missing a driver that I couldn't find from the Dell website? See attached image 1 for my Device Manager screencap
2) The Autorun function in my Windows 7 is not functioning for any DVD/CD I insert into the drive. Is this normal? I have never come across a fresh install of any version of Windows that did not have Autorun disabled by default. I checked to see if Autorun was enabled/disabled, but Win7 reports it as everything set to default. Yet no Autorun window pops up when I insert any optical disc. USB devices like my MP3 player and external USB drive works totally fine, but stuff like music CDs or softoware/movie DVDs don't show up anything. Ideas?
3) I've installed the drivers for my Intel 6250 WiMax adapter directly from the Intel website, yet my Device Manager is still saying that I do not have a proper driver installed, as depicted by the exclamation/yield symbol (in Image 2 attached below). You'll see, in the same image, that in the "Network adapters" tree, the 6250 is properly installed - as well, my wireless works flawlessly, as I tested the wireless-N speeds to full effect in the office today. Is my device manager complaining because I do not have a WWAN modem installed?
I appreciate the help!
thanks,
daver

1) In respect of the driver the "DVDRWBD" is the important bit with BD standing for blu-ray drive.
2) This link should provide you all the info you need to set up / enable auto play in windows 7 for optical drives and external media. Windows 7 disables this by default as a security measure.
AutoPlay - Enable or Disable AutoRun - Windows 7 Forums
3) If I were you, I would completely uninstall the Intel drivers you downloaded and get the proper 64bit drivers from the Dell site. If they do not have Win7 they will probably have vista 64bit, which should do for a start. Once you have installed these and your device is working correctly then you could look at Intel official drivers but make sure you get the right ones.
EDITED - The wiMax card issue is a little more confusing as I was not aware that you could spec an SXPS with this type of Intel Card? Have you fitted this yourself? If not then I would check you have this card fitted. I would definitely follow the instructions in my point 3 and get the proper dell drivers from here:

I also have the 6250 w/ Wimax and had the same problem as you. The issue is that there are 2 separate drivers you have to install, one for the wireless, and one for the Wimax. Windows treats it as 2 separate devices even though it's only one card.
After installing the regular wireless drivers, which it seems you already did, you need to install these:

Yeah so far aside from my Autorun issue (i have to get data from DVDs very often, and having Autorun automatically open the Windows Explorer window on-load is a time saver), everything else is working fine. Just wish I could figure out why Autorun doesn't want to play nice!
Wireless performance is amazing, compared to the old wireless-g I was running before. Never seen WiFi speeds this fast in my life. -
I finally solved the Autorun issue, which took a bit of Googling on my part, and realising that "OK", "Cancel", and "Apply" don't all mean the same thing.
I already knew about the gpedit.msc trick and disabled the "turn off Autoplay feature" option. After doing that, Autoplay still was not working. As it turns out, I must have accidentally clicked on "Cancel" instead of "OK" as the option was still set to the default, which basically means "turn off Autoplay".
thanks guys!
