    Hi all,

I have just bought a Dell XPS M1330 and am very happy with it, however 2 USB ports is nowhere near enough for the amount of things I want plugged in at the same time (about 6).

I like keeping my desk tidy and have found this Belkin 7-port USB hub which is ideal as most the ports go out the back (and behind my desk) whilst allowing a memory stick port to be easily accessible. Before splashing out on one, I just want to make sure that the M1330 will have enough power/resources to handle this. The reason I ask is because I saw a user review that indicated it would only be suitable for desktop PC's.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

AFAIK, any 7 port hub will require an external power connector, as a USB port supplies 500mAh, and most devices use 100mAh, so a 4 port hub without power = 100mAh for the hub and 100mAh per port. A 7 port hub will essentially be two 4 ports chained together, and will have external power to give 100-500mAh to each port, depending on the quality of the hub. I have an APC 7 port and it's never done me wrong, however the hub you listed should be fine.

You should get a powered USB hub, with a wall adapter, as while it will work, it might not work at 100%. For instance, it may go at USB 1.0 speeds, or it may partly work.

Dell Sent me the Belkin F5U216 to replace all the ports on the 1530 that my 8600 had, it was a horror story! If your using Vista. Had to dowlload the drivers and it messed everything up, Finally got a "Cables to Go" came with Vista driver Disk- set up flawlessly with no compatability problems.

    Hope that helps :)

Thanks all for your help :) It comes with a power adapator and I think I read that it wont work without this power supply - I really just wanted to make sure that having 6 USB devices effectively plugged into a single USB port wouldn't be overload for the system.

And Susie, the first thing I did when it arrived was to install Windows XP ;)

Hi Susie, I have just bought a Beilkin F5U216 dockstation. The main reason I bought it is because I need to use the serial(RS-232) port. I am using a Dell Vostro 1400, Windows Vista Business.
The driver came with the package was not vista compatible, however, I managed to download the vista driver from belkin's site and installed it. Now, the USB ports and LAN are working, but not the serial port, which I need it badly to connect to some of my devices.
Wonder if your dockstation is working properly?

    Thanks...

    Hi Sstarlight,
As I said in my earlier post, I had a lot of problems with the Belkin and finally gave up and got the Cables to Go. Sill has some quirks on the com3 but everything else works fine. But to be honest with you I believe it's Vista more than the replicators. Dell wouldn't downgrade me back to XP Pro so I bought a new Hard Drive and configured it to run Dual OS. Wasn't easy finding all the drivers for XP Pro as the 1530 is not made for it, but I found enough to get it running flawlessly. I'm on the XP side most of the time so its very rare that i'm on the Vista. Hope that helps,

Just 1 note, I was advised that replicator that don't have their own power souce do not function as well as the ones that do. Good Luck

    Hi Susie,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. My colleagues have been telling me that it could be vista's incompatibility too. I may install XP as the 2nd OS like what you r doing now as I need to use the serial port.
I do believe too that any replicator with external power source would have a better performance than those without.
Thanks again for your advices and feedbacks, I appreciate it =)

No it's not a compatibility issue with Vista and the replicator it's Vista! Vista isn't compatable with Vista! I went thru hell for 2 months with Ultimate and finally found out I could do the daul OS and did it immed. Can't load any software on Vista even vista programs the machine went balistic on me.

No problem, let me know if you need any help finding drivers. Just a suggestion as it was made to me before I converted it to dual OS. Buy a new Hard Drive suggest a 320- 7200rpm. Dell will not support your machine while you have XP on it so if you run into any machanical problems you can always throw the original HD back in. Dell will not assist in converting it, but if you are lucky and get a nice tech :D as most of them are, he might direct you to a web site to find what you need if you ask him nicely with tears in your eye's, lol . As my machine is an XPS 1530 loaded it was very difficult to find compatible drivers for everything my machine came with but I was able to get everything I needed on the XP side. I may still have the web links to some of the drivers so if Dell can't help let me know and I'll look for them but I'm not sure if they will be what your machine requires. 1 last thing Best Buy will do the down grade for you, not to expensive if you don't have a tech to do it for you, so will Staples if you have one near you and they are certified Dell Tech's. I don't recommend you do it yourself unless your really computer literate, I'm not and had a private tech do it for me.

    Good Luck!
