Does anyone know if Dell will do this? Very disappointed that they don't have this option now.

It uses the same size display as the Studio 17, which offers/used to offer a 1920x1080 display. 1080p is imminent but who knows when.

There may be eventually-but i wouldnt hold my breadth. If it were planned for the short term then it would have been mentioned in the marketing literature whenthe xps range was announced! I'd say 2011 sandy bridge refresh is the earliest we will see one.

Still, cant figure out why its not there to begin with!

Maybe... chatted with a Dell tech today and he said he believed it would be available in the next couple of days. Not concrete by any means, but there's hope...

And he said there would be new promotions on Monday

Just got off the phone with a XPS expert. He said that the XPS 17 screen can display 1080p resolution, as long as you have a graphic card option. If that's the case, I'm wondering why Dell is not advertising it.

Does this sound right? Either way, I think I'll wait for the b+rg screen which is supposedly going to be available within a month according to the XPS expert.

The screen is 1600x900. It won't run 1080p (1920x1080). Maybe they mean it can run 1080p when connected to an external monitor.

I spoke with the very knowledgeable sales person who helped me with my order of the xps 17. She has spoken with a number of people in the development division about the possibility of them bringing out the 1900x1080 option on the 17" laptop. She sent me an email that said, in part:

"... Logic would dictate that, if it is popular, that they would get it out by Christmas, but I don’t think I could comfortably say that it’s going to be out that soon. I’ll keep asking around – but I really don’t think that we’re going to have that screen out that fast. Sorry that this answer isn’t more definitive ..."

I have made the decision to try out the 1600x900, and if it is not acceptable, or the laptop generates a high amount of heat on the left palm rest as has been reported in the PC Magazine (AU) review, back to Dell it will go.

I will comment further if I hear anything else!

I could possibly see if they didn't offer it at all. But why would you offer it on smaller screens but not the biggest one?

The 900p screen might not be as bad as you think...

I own one of the new XPS 17s with the 900p screen. I also own a 3 year old XPS 17 with a 1200p screen. I've found the 900p screen is much nicer. I worked a lot on my old XPS 17 and I found after a while the high pixel density of the 1200p screen gave me eyestrain. The new screen is much easier on the eyes and I'd recommend it. 1080p might seem to be a must have but 900p is still very detailed.

I can understand why Dell might phase-out 1080p screens in laptops; if you use them for a full working day for a week it would just mess your eyes up. Fine for occasional use maybe.

Just in case you're interested, I would however say that the new XPS has much worse screen contrast than the old XPS. i.e. if you are looking at a dark image the blacks look grey. The usable viewing angle doesn't allow someone sitting next to you to share the screen. I think it's more an issue with WLED technology. New XPS 17 is has a much better screen than the RGBLED on the XPS 16. I would avoid any wide gamut display (unless it's 10 bit) because displays like the RGBLED show gradients with very obvious steps. I owned an XPS 1645 but returned it because the screen was impossible to calibrate. The new XPS 17 screen calibrated very well.

XPS 17 mass with 9 cell battery and 1 x 500GB hard drive is 3.7kg
Speakers are the best I've heard on any laptop, better than the old XPS M1710.
I think the internal layout isn't as good as the old M1710. The graphics card is now under the keyboard, so it heats up after about 20 minutes of use and becomes noticably warm. It is not burning hot by any means. (3GB Graphics card and 740QM processor). I've ordered a Zalman NC3000S cooling pad all the same.

When web browsing, word processing and working in Photoshop the machine runs almost silently and the heat in hardly noticable. This is much better than the XPS 1645, which had fans activated almost constantly.

I can answer any other questions about the laptop, hope this is helpful.

HUH? I have used a 1080p for work on a laptop daily for years and this is just not true. I, as well as many others, also need the 1080p option to fit what we need to fit on the laptop screen as I travel for work a lot and cannot use an external monitor. There is NO reason they would phase out 1080p as an option. It's not like you are forced to have it. It's an OPTION and a damn good one.

    I've been using 1920x1200 on a 15 inch for 7 years!!!

Just set the font and icon sizes the way you want them and you get less eye strain because fonts, icons and graphics are cleaner, and if you want you can have more usable screen real estate.

Bottom line: No 1080p option (or better) = no sale. If I had my ultimate choice, I'd have 2560x1600 on a 17" laptop.

Could be there's just something wrong with my eyes, just my experience with these screens. I use Maya a lot and you can't scale the text DPI at all, so a 900p screen seemed perfect. Best of luck finding the right laptop.

is there any logical reason i am missing why they wouldn't offer a 1080p screen? i mean if you make it an option, and charge whatever it costs for them to get the part, why the $%%# wouldn't they offer it knowing that a lot of people want it?

also, am i missing something in simply what makes it hard to get a 1080p screen in general? similar or better technology has been around for a long time so what exactly makes this something they would even consider not offering?

Dell buys the panel from LCD manufacturers. If other 17" laptops on the market have 1080p screens, then Dell can put them in the XPS 17. I think Dell probably has an agreement with LG, Samsung, etc, and they're just waiting for enough of an inventory to start offering it. It's just a matter of time. I'm kind of happy it isn't available yet, it makes waiting for the Sandy Bridge processors just a little easier :D

Also, would be nice if that 17" had a slot loading DVD (last time I checked it didn't have that) the tray loading thing is so outdated.

And add SB and new Radeon 6000 graphics and I am sold.

yea, it is VERY dumb of them because all the reviews of the 17" site it as a CON and probably dings their overall rating. once it is added, i doubt the reviews will be updated...

In the dell blog comments he never actually says 1080p, Lionel says
"Short answer is that we do have plans to offer a higher resolution panel for the XPS 17. At this point, don't have a clear ETA, but I can confirm that it will be an option sometime next year."

Im going to take this as
"We will be offering 1200p 120hz 3d RGBLED on XX/XX/XXXX"

No. That's so dumb and stupid. They should have that option in the first place or don't call it XPS. Besides, it's not that much more expensive if they added the option. Sony and HP have their 1080p 17+ inch laptops, why can't Dell? Why they have the 1080p on the XPS 15 and not the XPS 17 is lame.

I bought my XPS 16 right before the new model came out, so glad i did now. bought it for 1400 with a full 1080p screen. Dell wanted to save money this coming year so they screwed over their customers. I bet they got a sweet deal from the LCD manufacture trying to get rill of all of those 1440x900 displays.

    Eric G.s Dell blog page
Say hello to the XPS L702X - Dell News, Tips & Tricks

Gives a little info about what to expect for the L702X such as a probable late January announcement and this little tidbit:

    Eric G. said...
The L702X has the following LCD options:
    1. 17.3" 3D LCD, 1920x1080, TrueLife glossy panel, White-LED.
    2. 17.3" 2D LCD, 1600x900, TrueLife glossy panel, White-LED
