I've been doing a lot of research and have decided to cancel my order for the XPS 1530...it would just be stupid, in my opinion, to purchase something known to have a faulty part (even though I got the 4 year warranty). My only question now is whether or nor the new Montevina is going to solve the Nvidia GPU problem? If someone who really knows their stuff regarding this (someone whose highly technical) I'd appreciate their response. I'd rather not have any speculation. Thanks.

Intel's Montevina has nothing to do with the nVidia GPU problem.

Montevina gpu's isnt affected by the Nvidia defect as far as we know anyway. They are probably made from different materials.

I suggest you go for the new montevina platform instead of an older notebook.

The only way the problem is going to get solved is if nVidia alters their die packaging, new cards come out with better packaging, or notebook vendors stop using nVidia :p.

You do know that this is not an Intel issue nor is it just a Dell issue. The bad gpus deal with Nvidia. The new Intel chipset, Montevina, will not solve this problem as it doesn't deal with the Nvidia gpus. If you purchase a laptop with integrated video, such as Intel, then you won't have a problem.

Also, no one, including Dell, HP, Asus, Nvidia, has said that this is happening in newer models produced so far. You could be purchasing a new laptop, built within the last few weeks or months, and not have a bad gpu. It all depends on which batch was used to build these systems. Much like the Xbox 360 issues. Some people were hit and some weren't.

I am intrigued by your comment "Known to have a faulty part"

How do you know your ordered XPS will have a faulty GPU?
How many of the hundreds of thousands of these gpu's produced have failed?
Are all batches failing or just one or two from a particular production run?
Do you know the batch number of the failing GPU's?
Do you know that your XPS will be built with a GPU from this faulty batch/batches?

Or are you basing you decision to cancel, on one or two stories of failing GPU's on a some forums?

What I don't know is exactly the reason why I am cancelling. I'd much rather be safe than sorry if I'm going to buy something that costs me more than $2k.

It's not just stories, nVidia has written $200 million against earning to fix the problem.

Montevina is the Intel chipset and has nothing to do with the nVidia GPU problem. They will just use the current 9xxx series of cards in new models instead of the affected ones.
