For price reasons I can only have a certain spec and have come down to two options, One has an i5-2410M with 1080p screen and the other has an i7-2630QM with 720p screen.

The rest of the specs will be the same with 8gb (installed after), 500gb (7200rpm), backlit, 1gb 525m.

I will be using it for mostly school work with same gaming (minecraft, lfd2,tf2) and little video editing ect...

Which would i benefit from the most or a different laptop altogether, I was also looking at the acer aspire 5750g. At the moment I am using a very old dell dimension 5150 with 1gb ram so anything will really be a great improvement.

I would go for the i5-2410m with 1080p screen. (the screen is worth it)

Definitely go with the 1080p screen. Definitely.

The B+RG LED screen and the JBL speakers are the 2 best features of this laptop.

why can not you get 1080p with i7-2630QM and apply 932N$0ZCCHWZB9 coupon to get $100 off. It will only add $50 to your budget.

Get a different computer if you can't get the 1080p display on the XPS 15.

If you get the 720p screen in the XPS 15, you are flat out wasting your money on the laptop. Do not buy an XPS 15 that does not have the 1080p screen.

The screen makes more of a difference than anything. The 720p screen is crap, the 1080p screen is really good.

The power of an i7-2630QM is wasted when paired with a 15.6" 720p screen, but the i5-2410M is still more than enough for almost everything.

    @OP:
your school work and gaming going to be same on both processors....
but u will see quite a bit of difference in video editing with i7(damn i have 2630QM and still want more :) )....
i would go for 1080p+i5 if i were in your situation for 2 reasons....
    1. that i5 is more than enough for most of tasks
    2. i have heard horrible things about quality of 720p screen on xps 15

you can go to see the acer first, if screen ok, buy axer also ok. because dell now build quality very bad, if you buy online, may you need do replacement or refund. you can find this kind issue on dell forum or on net.

Processor is easier to upgrade later on vs LCD (you need the panel + 1080p LVDS cable). Plus XPS bezel is paper thin, you might accidentally break it when trying to remove it...

Does it have to be a Dell/XPS? If so, then yeah get the i5 with 1080p.

Are you new to the internet?

Dell build quality is not "very bad". I'd give it more of an "average" ...with better support than most (as scary as that sounds).

I agree. The build quality is actually pretty decent on my XPS 17. I've bounced it around a fair bit in the 4 months I've had it, and it still looks brand new. The 15 is supposed to be the same way, now, if you talk about the 15Z, that is a totally different animal...

Let me reiterate as it has been said many times before. If you do not get the 1080p B+RGLED, don't bother getting the XPS 15 at all. It is like a Mercedes C class without any options at all.

Never buy an XPS 15 with the stock screen. Low resolution and low quality.
