Hi, I am planning to get a new laptop within the next few weeks. My main purpose of use with the new laptop is Photography, so Image quality is paramount!!! I have been browsing through this forum and researched with good reviews about the dell studio 16 rgb led screen. Now problem is each model 1640,1645,1647 has it main problem of issues ranging from extreme heat, constant freezing, lock up,fan noise and the most noticeable throttling issues.
I dont plan to use the laptop to it's absoloute abilities...so hardly any gaming will be involved, just mainly phtography software and occasional movie watching. So overall which model has the less problems for what I will be using this laptop for?
My only criteria is I want the rgb led screen. Is the 1640 good enough?(is there a big peformance difference in Photo editing between a 1640,1645?
I write this thread as I dont want to spend time chasing up dell for parts, complaints and constant searching on threads for solutions! Or should I just get away from delll all together and get a Sony Vaio F series or AW? btw which screen is better Sony AW rgb screen or Dell xps 16 rgb led

Honestly if you are worried about heat and power issues and don't mind spending a little bit of extra cash. Go with the i5/i7 dual-cores and a SSD in the 1647. The new i5/i7 series processors run about 25% more energy efficient and are much quicker, and they are very similar in price to the 1640. The extra money I am referring to is the SSD. They are kind of pricey but they are imo the best option for a laptop. No moving parts so you can move your laptop around if you like, generate significantly less heat and consume less power. Their data access speed is also superior. My only concern would be that if you do a lot of video/picture editing, you likely need a lot of HD space. As for throttling, I would only worry about it if I were a gamer running more demanding games (crysis, bioshock, etc). I have one myself (i7-620M dual core, 128 GB SSD, RGBLED) and the only way I have ever gotten it to throttle is via the furmark+prime95.

Also is it mandatory to upgrade to a 9 cell batery especially on a 1640 to avoid heat issue plus c2d use more battery life? -
look into dell outlet, then spend and get the OCZ SSD drive.. u can get a 1640 for like $800 USD with amazing specs from outlet.. im not sure if AU has same type of thing or not.

Depending on how large and what brand of solid-state drive you intend to get, it could cost you an extra $150-450 ($154 bucks for the 128 GB Samsung SSD dell offers with the studio xps systems). I do not believe dell offers intel SSDs with their systems, although you could put it in yourself. Intel SSDs do however tend to run a bit more expensive. For internet browsing you will notice no difference between a Core 2 Duo and an i7, but depending on how demanding of photo-editing software you use, you may notice the difference there. I have for example a Q6600 quad core and an i7-620M dual core, and my i7-620M dual core laptop imo seems to run faster (although the laptop has the advantage of the SSD). Will the Core 2 Duo run your photo-editing software fine? Absolutely, the i7 may just run it better. As for the 9-cell battery, I am pretty sure all the systems come standard with 9-cells now.

Go with an i5 processor. It is actually faster for general use as it's processor cores run faster. The quad-core is only faster for something like movie encoding to x-vid from a DVD. If you do that all week long and share 20 movies with your ten thousand friends online then get the i7.
If not, save the bucks, get better general performance with an i5.

might want to stick with the WLED. if you haven't read the other threads, ths RGB LED has magnificent colors, yes, but its oversaturated with green or something like that. not precise colors for images. not too sure, could ask a RGB LED owner and a WLED owner to clarify.

No offense intended, but if you're giving someone information, you might want to actually be sure of what you're saying is correct. The way you phrased these two sentences makes you sound like you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
