My brother in law is configuring an XPS M1330 and he called me to ask which HD he should choose. The choices are:
    250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) Free Fall Sensor
The 7200RPM HD is the sameas the 5400RPM HD, is the Fail Sensor something important to have?

If he needs the disc space, go for the 250GB drive because the density makes up for the slower seek times.

Out of personal experience I don't think the free fall sensor is that important unless he's doing some sort of field work or is constantly on the move it does provide a little added safety in case of an accident.

He is torn between the larger disc space and the possible faster performance of the 7200rpm HD. Usually he goes for the fastest possible but he doesn't know if the 7200 rpm HD effects heat, battery life and noise.

Yes a higher density will claw performance back although it still won't match the 7200rpm drive in performace (Its a miniscule difference).
