    Newbie here researching laptops.

I'm wondering with the new XPS 15" and the 435 GPU - what would be the best resolution one could get when it's connected to an external monitor? I could probably live with the 1080 display but see that Dell have some monitors that far exceed this resolution and so I am wondering if the laptop could drive them and produce far greater res when I'm in the office and running my CAD stuff (big autocad layouts etc.)

Any particular recommendations on external monitors if I am buying one at the same time as the laptop?

I'm not really into games, but will want to run some 3d modelling stuff like solidworks etc. on this machine so if anyone has comments and suggestions on this aspect, please chime in.

    Thanks very much.

I just came across this forum last night and it looks invaluable for researching and trying to decide on what to buy.

Cheers from the east coast of Canada.....

    Hi there,

An HDMI output is provided on the XPS 15, so I'm guessing that the max res would be as per the published HDMI standard. Maybe someone can confirm, but may be up to 2560x1600.

Even though HDMI can go higher than 1080p, lots of times it doesn't. However, the XPS 16 also has a Display Port, which is better for a computer monitor anyway, which is capable of pretty much any resolution.

Folks - thanks very much for the info. I see that the new xps15 has this display port as well so it looks like I'm good to go as far as an external monitor with greater res.

My bad, typo, should say XPS 15. I'm just so used to typing 16, lol.
