I just ordered an xps 13. I plan on getting the d3100 dock, an Asus mx279h monitor and dell wireless keyboard and mouse. Is this all I need to use the xps as a desktop? I've owned laptops over the years, but this is the first time I've ever used a setup like this.

Yup. That's about it. Keyboard, mouse, monitor.

Optional items could be a dedicated pair of speakers / headphones, and maybe an Ethernet cable if you want to connect your laptop to your home network by hard-line instead of wireless. Your WiFi signal will get a bit weaker when the laptop is docked (with the lid closed), because WiFi antennas are almost always mounted in the monitor bezel. And if the laptop lid is closed, that antenna will no longer be oriented vertically, as it would be if the laptop lid is open. Not a major issue, but may be something you notice if your WiFi signal strength was borderline weak to begin with.

Otherwise, enjoy your new toy! That laptop is really an exceptional design that you only see once every few years.

USB 3.0 type a male to type b mame cable. The dock should come with one.

And an HDMI cable for your monitor.
