I have just ordered a new SXPS13 and was wondering about upgrading the wireless card. I noticed that the Intel 5300 was not compatible with the NVIDIA chipset. What about the 5100 or the 4965? Are there are any other wireless cards I can put in that would give me comparable, or at least improved, performance? Thanks for your help.

I dont see why on a fairly new model Dell that the intel 5300 card will not work..
All the intel cards should work on that unit but there are a few things you need to find out before hand like does this laptop use full mini or half mini wifi cards, does the laptop have all 3 aerial wires to cater for the N band wireless network, do you or will you be using N band network if not a wireless card G band will do you only needs 2 aerial wire.
Again you could look for cards that use the Atheros chipset. :)

Dell doesn't whitelist their wireless cards like some other manufacturers. For the most part, you should be able to use any mini PCIe wireless card in your machine assuming you have the right form factor (half height or full height). Where does it say that the 5300 is not compatible with the SXPS chipsets?

There is a post in the Networking and Wireless section titled "Intel WiFi Link 5300 works with intel chipset only?" and a thread in this section called "XPS 13 and Intel 5300 card issue" that I am getting my information from. I have not tried installing the card myself, only read about some problems others have encountered. Hopefully, these people are exceptions and I am able to put it in without issue.

I am thinking of upgrading the wireless card in my SXPS13 because it cant see my wireless router which is on the second floor. I use the laptop on the first floor in our office. All the other machines can see the router excellent but not my new dell... ?

I can confirm that the Intel 5300 doesn't work on XPS 13. OS is freezing right after driver install. And i've tried with 2 different cards...

The Intel 5300 does work in the SXPS13, you just have to make sure the previous drivers are uninstalled and the new intel 5000 series drivers are installed, I suggest using the Intel Drivers from Intel's website, and not the Drivers from the Dell website. But the 5100 and 5300 do work.

On a side note, the 5300 is overkill since it needs three antenna's, and unless you get another antenna, it's kinda of throttled.

did you tried that card in the xps 13? every time the dell drivers were uninstalled. Intel drivers were installed after the card switch.

Me too. I have the same problem. It will freeze on boot up, the time when you disable the wireless card which means no sleeping, and the time when you turn off the laptop.

I'd like to see a video of someone getting it to work properly, so far no one's been able to get it working.

It seems like the intel wifi 5300 doesn't know how to shut down himself properly. That's the main reason that caused the freezing issue all the time for me.
