I received my much-anticipated M1530 last week and while it seems like a great laptop overall, I am not happy with the display. I ordered the day before the upgraded screen options were announced (called to see if I could upgrade but was told it was too late in the build process).
Nonetheless, I'm not sure if I'm really unhappy with the resolution or if I got a bad display.
My son and I lined up our four laptops (3 yr old I-9200, 6 month old XPS M1210m, 1 month old I-1420 and this M1530) and played the I legend trailer simultaneously. The display on the M1530 was noticeably the worst. The blacks were dark gray, the colors not as crisp or bright. Modifying the brightness brought no improvement.
When looking at type on a white background everything seems grainy.
I am definitely sending it back and re-ordering with a higher resolution screen, I'm just wondering if I can argue that this one is defective, based on what I saw, so that Dell will pick up the return shipping.

You can call them and they will send a new one out...WITH THE EXACT SAME SPECS. When you get the new one, you arrange their shipping back..no cost to you.

Yeah I was afraid of this, so I decided to cancel my order and get a new one with a 1440x900 screen.

I received my M1530 with the 1280x800 screen 5 days ago and i've zero complaints with it.
Sounds like you've got a bum screen.
My screen is crisp, bright, whites are white, blacks are rich black and the colours practically leap off the screen with the glossy finish.
Gaming in particular looks beautiful.
Swap it for a brand new build.
Good luck on round two. -
Yeah although the new screens will be better, that 1280x800 should still be pretty nice!
-
My display was like that too. I have a replacement screen coming though.

Yeah, my screen looks so good, I don't even know if want to upgrade it lol

Thanks for all your replies. I called today to return the laptop and Dell issued me a label to pay for the return. I will be placing a new order and will most likely go with the upgraded screen on the re-order. Hopefully I won't have the same issue on the new one.

The problem is the Manufacturer of the LCD Panels, not the resolution of the screen Tell them you want a LG/Phillips or they can keep their laptop.
