Looking for some opinions here. I just got rid of my desktop that I used for gaming. My wife and I just had a new baby, so my evenings are spent in the family room instead of my office. A laptop makes more sense to me for right now.

I wanted to see what the m1730 users opinions were on the system for gaming using the 8700GT(SLI) or 8800GTX(SLI) cards. Is it worth the $700 more? Not too worried about weight, but loud fans tend to bother me. Anything else out there that you might recommend? I used to have a 1710 whent hey first came out and liked it and I like the support, but I'm open if someone has some thoughts on an alternative.

Come on, 8800GTX SLI is a DREAM for many gamers. It is definitely worth it if you want to be able to play everything in the market at the best gfx possible. It will take a while before games become more than the 8800GTX SLI can handle. Sure theres the 9xxx series, but the 8800GTX SLI still stands proud and can trample over every game out there.

8700GT SLI.... errr... not so much.

yes, get a $1000 loaded desktop and a eeePC..

seriously, unless u plan to have mobile gaming(gaming in work, office, different rooms)... a 8lb desktop replacement isnt really optimal.... figure in the higher rate of problems with laptops(shrunken parts = more problems, heat)..... not to mention the low upgrade-capability of laptops vs desktops...

    oh well, ur choice

If you can afford it, 8800M GTX SLI will blow away any game at WUXGA, including Crysis :)

i have to say after being a sager owner among a ton of other notebooks i am very happy with my 1730. im just waiting on the lcd panel i ordered (i wanted a specific brand / model) and then it will go back together.. and aside from sucking the battery down like a drain its a great machine just make sure for extended runs you are close to a outlet. build quality is EXCELLENT on it and its overall and great performer

Which graphics card suits you best depends on the games you want to play. If they're not too demanding I guess the 8700's will do fine. For the heavier ones and a lot of future games the 8800's will be the better choice.
As for the fans, the m1730 is really quiet. I don't think that's going to be an issue.
You won't regret buying the m1730. It's a great machine, runs everything perfectly. I haven't had any issues (so far ;) )
