So I called Dell with concern about my order that is supposed to arrive 07/02/10 (July 2nd) and I am pleased to announce that after i called and spoke to a man he told me that my revised E.D.D is July 28th.................................REALLY?!

I placed my order on 06/21/10 and now he says the revised delivery date is 07/28/10. Can someone tell me if this is just a sick joke or the truth? 26 days extra on top of the first E.D.D....

However, when I called the man stated that the tracking number and info has been received and that they are just waiting for it to leave production which could be any time now as it should be close to finished production....? This all makes me pretty confused.

Now, knowing all of this, should i expect my order to be here July 28th? July 2nd? Anytime next week...? Help me out guys :(

It would make sense that if the tracking number has been received that it should basically be ready to be shipped out to me correct?

Dell really dropped the ball here IMHO, i didn't even customize my laptop that much aside from adding a 9-cell battery in spite of the 6-cell. That is literally the only upgrade. That and a bluetooth module :p hehe.

All in all, i just basically want to know if dell is really going to have me delayed over a month for a notebook? A company of this size should not take 1 month and 7 days to build and ship out a notebook....just saying.

Thanks for all of your responses in advance,

    Mike.

I'm a little confused as to the chronology of the events here, but in my opinion, no, it's not reasonable for Dell to expect you to wait that long for a system that was originally scheduled to be delivered next week.

I would confirm with Dell what your actual expected ship date is. If it has really been revised to the end of July, I would raise hell. Whenever you make a purchase, any delay in its delivery is an opportunity cost to you, and thus makes the unit more expensive. If you had known it would take that long to ship, you might have factored that into your decision and gone with a different product. It's unfair for them to change the ship date to the extent that they have.

I went through a similar situation with Sony. If the ship date really is revised for the end of July, I would expect some kind of compensation from Dell. Did you receive a discounted price? If not, you should.

I did not receive anything except the guy saying "the parts on the computers are shipped from different plants in the U.S. and there is also a high demand for this particular product... which can cause delays"...and i completely understand that, however changing the date from the first week of July to the last few days of July? Come on.

I will however tell them what you said in a few days, and go with the motto that had I known that this laptop would take this long I would've taken my business elsewhere..etc.etc.

If the laptop is actually going to take them until the end of July, it probably means they hasn't even started production on it yet (I'm pretty sure they don't actually assemble the laptop until a day or two before its sent out), so you should be able to change/cancel your order. I had originally ordered a Studio 15 laptop, but thankfully I convinced myself to change to an XPS16, I called a day or two after my order was placed and they were still able to change it over to the XPS 16...

I guess what I'm saying is that this delay is completely unacceptable, a week delay would be back enough in my eyes. You should call back right now and either ask them to guarantee their originally EDD (or close to it) or cancel your order.

While i would love to do what you stated (cancel) I desperately need this new notebook as it is for school and i can't afford to wait any longer. I will call them and ask them how it can take that extra amount of time however...cause that is completely unacceptable.

I just had a desktop computer ship a full 2 weeks before the EDD.

So, don't put too much thought into it.

Update: Just got off the phone with a customer service rep and i was told this:

"The reason for your delay sir is the vast amount of orders for the Dell Studio XPS 16 as it is a very demanding product..."

....That's the best they could do? Personally, i think that is a terrible excuse to have a notebook delayed for 26 days....seriously lol

    Same here.

My ship date for my M6500 was 7/7/10 but I received it on 6/16/10.
I guess it would come down to overall demand however.

The new GPU (5730) must be attracting a lot of new attention to the XPS16 or something....

This covers my thoughts exactly. Dell tends to give you the maximum time it would take them if all of their processes/steps were moving at the slowest pace possible. Usually they tend to ship it way before the provided EDD. It also tends to make them look better as you think "Wow that was much earlier than the EDD I was given, cool." It just covers all bases for them in addition to making them look good. Although I do feel your anger, just "Don't put too much thought into it."

I waited over a month for my SXPS 1645 when I ordered it back in November. I didn't think it was unreasonable, but I did customize it quite a bit. But like others have said, they usually give you the worst case scenario and then get the computer out before then. The XPS desktop I ordered in January shipped over two weeks early. Not sure why they gave you such a quick EDD originally.

If you don't want the computer, they should let you cancel at this point, if it hasn't entered production.

The original EDD is what would erk me as a customer. You see that ship date when you're building your computer, so you make your plans accordingly (and that estimated ship date is ultimately a part of what you are paying for). Dell suddenly changing that ship date, not by a few days, but by weeks, is like false advertising. What if a customer needed a computer by a certain date and made their purchase based on Dell's original estimate? (This happened to me with Sony.) If the customer had known the computer would have taken longer to ship, then that would have been a part of the decision making process and the customer could have considered another computer. Changing a delivery date after the purchase (especially because of a bogus reason like "high demand") means that you are no longer getting what you paid for originally. I don't find that fair, and I think if Dell values you as a customer, they should understand this and credit you with a discounted price.

You basically read my mind, as that was my point exactly lol.

On another note, I checked my dell website account and the status said shipped miraculously? Shipped out June 30th at 4:27pm lol. My order now says "In Transit in U.S via U.S.A. GROUND LINEHAUL". Now, although I made quite a fuss, I had a reason to. I spoke to THREE different customer service reps and they all told me that there has been delays and the new E.D.D is July 28th blah blah blah. This threw my expectations out the window and I was quite angry..cause 3-4 week delay? I mean come on :p. Then, out of the blue, it gets shipped and is due in 2-3 days...?

This is just a case of speaking with those dumb workers (sorry if i offend anyone..) in India not know jack about what they are doing.

Thanks Dell, for having UNREAL customer service!

On another note, I am extremely excited that my LAPPY IS ALMOST HERE :D

Good to hear. Glad the story has a happy ending. And I don't think it matters what manufacturer it is or what country their customer service reps are in. The people on the phone generally don't know what they're talking about when it comes to sales or customer service for computers.

Hey...easy on the 'dumb workers from India' comments!! :p

I live in India and I find the Dell customer service here just fine :) And its oftentimes been better, if not as good as the customer service I got from BT and O2 when I was in England, hehe...

Glad to see that it turned out alright for ya!

Dell's are not made in the US! The laptop is assembled outside the US and comes back for retail. My order came in 2 weeks before the EDD. Yes I guess they cover the worst case scenario. If you get a tracking number sometimes it's not accurate where the item is in transit.

You were told not to bother yourself too much about it, as this is what happens sometimes (as aggravating, and to an extent, unprofessional as it may be). Glad it worked out, though there's no need to insult anybody. I understand the CSRs maybe annoying to deal with sometimes but I believe the blame probably lies in the hands of the higher-ups. I don't think they inform the CSRs as well as they should, and then they train them to make vague comments that don't really "help" anything. No offense taken, but still no need for the insults. Enjoy the laptop, and I hope it performs as it should.

Sorry if i offended you? but..when this is a laptop for school and i'm leaving on the 26th, when they told me the 28th could be the day it gets here, of course i'm going to be angry. Furious even... the customer service reps don't know jack, so sorry if i offended you or made a rude comment, but everyone is thinking it. As far as I know, the higher-ups do train them very well..and they are just incompetent to understand how to deal with people not speaking their language. They don't know english, so OF COURSE they are not going to be able to help anybody well enough to solve their problems. Often enough, they just tell you bu11sh!t, so they don't have to deal with you. Didn't mean to get your panties in a knot, but seriously, this happens with every companies customer service, not just Dell's.

I've found overseas customer service reps to be much friendlier than American reps. While I sometimes might have trouble understanding them, I think their skills with the English language must be exemplary before they can be in that position.

Regarding reps not knowing jack, that I think is simply pervasive in the computer industry. Your run of the mill customer service or sales rep is geared toward answering questions that will be asked by your most basic users. Probably 90% of the subscribers to this forum would find any conversation with these reps frustrating, because they clearly are not experts.

Let's hope not! I hope all goes well, just be excited that it was shipped out quickly and I'm sure it will function fine! As for mine, it was supposed to arrive July 2nd, this past Friday but they informed me of delays and that it would be here July 5th (Monday) so I should be available for when it comes between 10am and 5pm? Automated service said something like that. I just hope I didn't have to confirm it by pressing "1" on my phone or something, because I had to drive my brother to work and we were running late as it was, so i had to hang up on the automated service ! I got the message, lets just hope they didn't need me to confirm I would be home and that they just deliver it!

definately AGREED! The American reps act like they are much better than you and know everything while the overseas reps, especially those from India, tend to be very kind despite not understanding everything I say.

I bought an HP computer for the new Conroe chips. I ordered it and they later pushed out the delivery date by a week. They also gave me a $50 or $75 gift certificate towards a future purchase. The system wasn't time critical but, in general, when they slip, they should do something for you.

Having software problems with their delivery systems is really unacceptable these days. They are, after all, a computer company.

So what happens when dell delays the laptop shipping?

I ask because on Dells site the EDD is the 8th ( i ordered the 26) and on Fedex's site the EDD is the 7th, but as i track the package fedex doesnt even have the laptop in their possesion, the only update fedex has on their site is that they have received shipping information from dell. Is this a bad sign? Fedex is saying the package should be delivered tomorrow but they havent even sent it out of the warehouse.

Yes thanks I totally agree. Especially seeing that since my earlier post, it has now traveled a great distance in what..3 hours? I think it was a fedex error this time opposed to a dell issue.

FedEx is frequently like that. They get the post and then they update the location halfway to the destination. UPS is the best at updating the computer screen with where your stuff is.
