There will not be a new "Studio" XPS replacement because...

It almost makes sense from a business perspective. It's possible that the Studio XPS was cannibalizing too much Alienware sales. However, now I don't know what I will buy next time I'm looking for a laptop. I want something powerful enough to game with, but without the bulky and overdone styling, and ridiculous price premiums, of Alienware/ASUS G-series/Clevo laptops. Is it too hard to make a high quality sleek looking laptop with a bit of mid-high end power? Looks like it might be HP Envy for me next time around. Goodbye Dell. It was nice while it lasted.

I'd say the new XPS 15/17 definitely offer mid-high end GPU power.

Whereas the 5650 in the Envy 14, for example, is fairly meh.

You're comparing 14 inch laptops to 15 inch ones. Of course the 15 inch will be faster in most circumstances. The 5650 in the Envy 14 beats the 425m in the XPS 14, and the 5830 in the Envy 15 (what I'd be interested in) is much better than the 435 in the XPS 15.

Same here. Never wanted to buy Mac, and i was happy with this XPS 16 even with its problems. But if there won't be Studio XPS, i might go for Mac or else...No Dell..

Also, you say XPS was cannibalizing Alienware.. True... But now they have no MBP alternative and this is another big negative

True, but the Envy 15 is a beast that won't last an hour and a half on battery... needs switching graphics. Whereas even the GT 420m is no joke, it's faster than the GT 330m.

I can't believe dell would do this, I mean at least make the studio xps like the adamo. It could of worked for dell if they just fixed there problems.

Anyway dell in 10 years I have spent over 20K with you and now it's all gone. (Mostly in dell servers but this is just too upsetting.)

Good lord, it's not like this notebook devalues money you spent with them in the past, and it's not like they're not going to be putting out more notebooks in the future. Take a deep breath, okay? It's gonna be all right. :)

True, but the 1645 is gone :( leaving the Envy as the only alternative for now. They (hopefully) might update the new XPS 15 with a SB CPU and a 67x0 GPU, but that will probably be a good 4 months away, if it even happens.

Not it's not, I'm tired of waiting for dell to get it together. I hate mac but it seems like they are the only ones who can get there stuff right. Dell just keeps making these computers cheaper and cheaper. Maybe there main focus is price, which knowing dell will only lead to more issues. Dell is done in my book.

As enthusiastic as we all are, I suspect Dell knows their business better than we do. Furthermore, they've already come out and said that products like the Adamo (and undoubtedly the Studio XPS) will return next year within the threshold of the XPS lineup. Talking with Dell reps I know that they have been getting a lot of requests to bring the XPS brand back, and it seems to make sense for them.

Frankly, I support the rebranding they've done; now it's going to be less confusing for regular people. Keep in mind that just because options like the Studio XPS are gone for the moment, it doesn't mean that Dell can't explore new ideas - they're just going to be called XPS notebooks, or whatever.

Also, love it or hate it, but the forward-hinge design is here to stay, at least for a while. This is their new design statement to try and make the laptops more recognizable as Dells across the different product lines. I mean, I think the new XPS 'books are kinda clunky, but I actually do like the hinges.

How will going to Apple help you... everyone's mostly whining about the GPU being a step back, but the MBPs run GT 330M's, which are anything but impressive.

I think its a good move, finally simplifying choices. Having Studio, Studio XPS, and XPS, would be ridiculous.

I personally, like the change. Maybe they'll add a 13 inch and 16 inch in the XPS lineup....

the forward hinge design can be great, but its not innovative at all.

You can make statements about anything all day, but to make the XPS line a FUGLY, and to think that is a good move, oh boy, there must be some excess of lsd in their water

    1) I thought that about Gateway, too. I know Acer saved them, but seriously.... I loved their latitude X200 ripoff (or was it the other way around? I've had both, with almost identical docking stations :p).

    2) More than just asthetics. The m11x has poor hinges from an engineering perspective. New users keep BatBoy (the NBR AW mod) busy closing all the new hinge issue threads.

    There is no mobile HD5770m.

I'm definitely curious as to whether Dell will bring the hinge design to AW (specifically sitting substantially forward from the rear). I mean it seems like an obvious choice but it would look pretty weird.

I like the new hinge design... lol. I have a feeling that these new XPS laptops will have lids that are not torqued on so tightly that they lift the entire chassis as you open them. It's my biggest pet peeve. Anyone who has used a Macbook will try to open laptops with one hand, and on the SXPS 16, it's just... not... possible. It irks me so much that I don't even bother closing it a lot of the time.

It's a small issue for sure, but it serves to highlight how much was overlooked in favor of style on the SXPS 16. I'm sure the reason for the tight hinges was the giant, oversized lid. There's so much glue used on this computer... it's everywhere. Those small XPS badges on the hinge? Glue. The edge-to-edge bezel? Glue (it's why they just replace the entire screen assembly and not just faulty screens or scratched bezels). The leather? Glue. Dust covers? Glue. The strip of metalized plastic on the lid? Glue. The shiny Dell emblem on the lid? That's glued on as well. All these things add up to a laptop that deteriorates rapidly... I'm inclined to sell mine and jump on or start a bandwagon. And my conclusion after using the system and realizing all these things? Dell tried to be as stylish as possible, as cheaply as possible, and I wonder if that's not why we don't have any brushed aluminum surfaces on the SXPS line.

There's a lot of discussion about this in the other XPS 15/17 thread, but the 5730 is faster than the 435 in the XPS15, but is slower than the 445 in the XPS 17.

Slightly edited answer from the other thread:

The reason that I don't believe the 435 will beat the 5730, is that x7xx cards are the top of the ATI midrange, whereas the x3x cards are at the bottom of Nvidia's midrange. If the 435 could beat the 5730, they would have marketed it as a higher card, like a 440 or something like that. The 445 is the real competitor for the 5730, and as it is a newer-generation GPU, it is understandably faster.

According to Nvidia's own specs, the 435m has 249.6 GFLOPS of processing power. Yes, GFLOPS aren't the best measure of GPU power, but it can be used to compare relative performance differences between different cards from the same manufacturer. For example, the 335m does 233 GFLOPS, making the 435m only 7% more powerful. There's no way that a 335 + 7% will beat a 5730.

The 5730 does 520 GFLOPS. Yes, there are differences among manufacturers, but even with that variance you can't tell me that Nvidia's self-advertised 250 GFLOPS will beat ATI's 520. Also the fill rates are higher for the 5730 (5.2 Giga Pixels, 13 Giga textures) vs the 435 (2.6 GP, 10.4 GT).

Lastly, the 5730 has GDDR3 RAM, vs the regular DDR3 RAM for the 435.

You're right, we'll have to wait for more real-world benchmarks to be sure, but until we know more, it's very safe to assume that the 435 is slower.

This, IMHO, is the most salient point from my experience in trying to find the Goldilocks laptop. I eventually discovered the SXPS 16 through scouring through forums and review sites to tease out from the mess of model numbers and configuration options what I should purchase.

I'm an enthusiast, so I'm well-accustomed to digging and researching. Most folks aren't, especially if these folks are also shopping around other brands (many of which are an even more confusing jungle of part numbers, model numbers, and configurations...Toshiba, anyone?). Dell now presents the consumer with three lines, not five, with their performance differences clearly delineated. I can understand the wisdom in that even if the result for me might be less appealing choices overall.

I'm pretty sure NVIDIA only advertises double precision GFLOPS. AMD touts single-precision.

They both use the same ram. 25.6 Gb/sec 800MHz GDDR3.

My money is on the 435M being faster...

I wonder if they will make a slim Alienware or XPS to replace the Adamo's vacancy. They do still have the v13 and Latitude13, but they ar business laptops.
