Just out of curiosity does anyone have an idea when Dell will launch/talk about its new/refreshed SXPS models? I know they just did a minor refresh with the new i7 CPUs. So it all bowls down to:

What (as in what would be inside)?

When (as in what point in time)?

    Thanks.

There has been several threads around here about i5 procs next year (possibly Q1)

i5 has already been shipped to OEM/ODM's and will be officially released 1/7/2010.

CES will be awesome this year and there should be a whole gaggle of new systems to boot.

I'd suggest waiting to see what is coming as it is only a few weeks away.

i7 generates a lot of heat, probably arrandale is the next refresh.

The 32nm Westmere platform (Arrandale) will most likely run much cooler.

Couple that with the gpu on die, and you got some really nice thermal and power savings.

MMMmmmmmm.... like a cheeze sandwich ??? with the cheese actually between the bread, and not all alone on another plate... LOL

It will be interesting to see how intel starts moving from the i7 we have now, to a whole new concept of a processor. Lets just wait and see, still remember when the P4 processors came out with Hyper threading, they broke the 3 GHz barrier, but still get outperformed by even the most basic C2D processor...

Nehalem was such a major change from previous Intel processors, and the results speak for themselves.

These new i5's are going to be fantastic, IMO.

    I can't wait!!

I'm not sure why you think anyone in these forums would have inside knowledge of what is going to come next from Dell or any other major OEM. We can speculate, but only Dell knows what they're planning.

New models are closely guarded trade secrets. They are normally unknown until the OEM announces the new models.

ATI will be launching some 5xxx DirectX 11 mobile parts at CES more than likely.

A number of new models have appeared (including from the likes of Asus), and a German company has been offering models with Corei5 + ATI 5650 parts: http://www.deviltech.de/

    "ASUS N61JA-JX046X
PN: N61JA-JX046X | Processor - Type: Intel Core i5 430M, Memory: 4096 MB, Graphics chip: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730, Screen - Size: 16 inch, Screen - Resolution: 1600x900, Hard disk - Capacity: 500 GB, Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium "

Given the availability of these, hopefully Dell will get that Studio XPS 1647 model out quickly so I can make a decision. My only worry would be they go to Core i5 but keep the older 4670 graphics :(

Well, the good news for you tickedon is that CES is only a few weeks away.

So wait and see what happens there and even if new GPU's arean't announced there, you can pretty much bet that Dell will have new gpu's out by Feb.

This would be my guess, though ;)

glad to know there will probably/most likely be major refreshes and updates all around at CES. I guess I can wait a little bit to see what's hot. I like what the i5 has to offer.

No reason against the SXPS at all, it was more for my desire to have a more gaming directed laptop. I was aiming to just buy an Alienware M15x, but now that I realize CES is just around the corner, I will probably wait for any announcements then. If I had the 1640 with the ATI 4670 then I probably would not have sold it, but with the 3670, some games could not be played to their potential (b/c I like having it at native res 1080P).

If they'd roll out a SXPS 14, that'll be sweet. i5+switchable Intel-ATI graphics. :D Then again, that's just wishful thinking.

Dell's already brought out the Adamo XPS, so there probably won't be anything new from them at CES.

With Intel releasing a whole bunch of new processors for laptops and ATI releasing new DirectX 11 5xxx series graphics chips for laptops as well, I would be surprised if we didn't see lots of updates from Dell and potentially some new models.

Other manufacturers have several new "mainstream" (e.g. not Adamo-like!) models lined up that have been leaked in various forms, I would be surprised if Dell didn't have something new to show at one of the biggest events of the year.

Arrandale is perfect for the Studio XPS 16 design. The i7's are really meant for systems like Alienware that have adequate cooling to deal with the heat these things produce. I don't know why Dell even bothered putting i7 in the 1645, it was a complete failure. I can't wait till I can upgrade this crusty G92 (260M GTX) to a 5870 :D

The same could be said for many manufacturers, the SXPS 16 just has the most problems of them all. It should've been obvious to the OEM's that any laptop that wasn't originally designed to handle a C2Q could never be refreshed to use an i7.

Shouldn't be an issue as I put a 280 in the M15x with no issues, but ya never know.....

I'm very confident that it will and I'll bet money right now Dell will implement bios throttling in the M17x i7 refresh as well.

I'm not so sure about the throttling.

I would imagine that Flex and Dell's other ODM's are fully aware of the problem and I doubt this whole fiasco happens again.

I have been wrong before, though ;)

Yes there will be updates, but i am pretty sure that they will come out with new machines at some point. I do agree with 5150 that it was a failure and a waste of time to put the core i7 in that machine, it just runs way to hot. The adamo xps is just a waste of time, it sucks really bad! At least have switchable graphics, it's not even as light as i thought it was, if i wanted something like that then i would go for a latitude z.
