i already bought a studio xps 16" (sig) for £920 witha 1year warranty.
is it worth upgradeing to 2 or 4(3 is price of 4) warranty, which is £140 and £170.

iv never had a pc or laptop fail on me unless it happened right after i got the laptop which is covered anyway.

did most of you lot get an extra warranty?
i cant justify paying £170 for it, i would rather add £60 and get a SSD.

    Depends.

How long do you plan on keeping your 1640 before you replace it?

Depends on how technical you are, and like the previous poster, how long you plan to keep it anyway.

If you're particularly handy, don't opt for it. I can get spare parts from ebay and fix any problems myself, and it should be cheaper than paying for warranty (and I can replace pretty much any part on a laptop provided I have the parts).

That's it, think about how much the same hard drive will cost 2 years or + down the line if it fails its going to be half the price than it is now. Things like the mother board or something abit more technical may be trouble some to get down the line. Depends if you want everything done for you and peace of mind but maybe you'll never need it but we are talking about Dell here but you may well keep it for a couple years and get something different I know I would.

I usually advise the extended warranty though the upgrade for the UK seems a bit more than that of the U.S. if you include promotions. Dell has a pretty good warranty over here in the states in my experiences and I usually end up having bad luck with OEMs. Thus far my Dimension 9100 order has had a mother board failure, an overly annoying wireless mouse, and dead pixels on the monitor all of which has been replaced by Dell.

The warranty costs from Dell Outlet are just ridiculous though ($500 to get a 4 year warranty on a $700 computer).

    I've got an M1210 2.0GHZ 4GBRAM that I have a 3yr extended warranty on.

    In two years:

    • Screen replaced once
    • Hard drive replaced once
    • Motherboard, GPU, heat sinks, fans replaced twice (as of tomm)
    • CPU replaced once (tomm)

    So mine has paid off.

And it still has a warranty to 09/10, so when I go to sell it after I get my 1640, it will have all brand new parts, and over a year warranty left, which should help it sell.

I also got the 3YR Extended Complete Care warranty with the 1640, but it was because there was special to get 5% off the entire system, which I was able to stack onto the 15% off, so it was worth it.

I say if you're going to change laptops in less than 2 yrs and can do upgrades yourself, don't bother. If you plan on having it for awhile, then I would consider it.

My two cents for what they're worth..
    (2 cents.. :p )

i would get one probably, a 2 or 4 year one but i just aint got £140 or £180. im not paying for most of the laptop anyway.

i plan on changeing in 2 years i guess.

and talking like its payed off, the laptop shouldnt break to begin with.

Oh, and I guess I should mention that I work from home, live in FL, and sit by the pool with my laptop all summer... hmm...wonder if that has anything to do with my heat issues???

So yes, the warranty is well worth it to me to do what I want and not have to worry about anything going wrong :)
