Hi,
I am planning to buy S XPS 16 next week, wanted your suggestion/comments on the below:
The base model comes with 4 GB RAM. Upgrading to 6 GB costs around $360.
I was planning to add more RAM later but couldn't find cheap 3GB RAM stick pair. I am not sure whether this laptop has more than 2 RAM slots, so thought that I would need two 3 GB sticks to make 6 GB RAM.
Do any of you know how I can upgrade the RAM to 6 GB myself? Any links for cheap RAM compatible with this laptop?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Raj

or maybe one 4 GB and one 2 GB if the laptop has only 2 RAM slots.
But whichever site I visited the single 4 GB RAM stick was damn costly. -
Yes, you would need the 4GB DDR3 Ram, and that's over $300+
So, is it worth it to pay that price?
Here is a linky to newegg:

I wouldn't do it. For 2GB more, not worth that cost...

The cost of DDR3 RAM is so costly at the moment it is really not worth the extra cost the prices will go down as DDR2 becomes less popular

There is no 3GB Stick of ram, they do not make them in DDR2 or DDR3. To get 6GB you need a 4GB stick and a 2GB Stick. If you want 6GB of ram in your laptop then all you need to purchase is 1 4GB stick and replace one of the 2 2GB's in your laptop with it. There are only 2 RAM slots in most laptops, including this one.

Just wait untill DDR3 becomes the standard and then the 4gb modules should come down in price eventually. It's going to happpen sooner or later, like how we are all going to move to i7's at some point in the future but it's just not catching on yet. It's just the jump in tech, when PCI express 2 came out, people were a bit shifty to move to it but now it's pretty much standard

2GB RAM is cheap, but there is no cheap 4GB RAM available at the moment. For most uses, 2x2GB will be enough, and the upgrade isn't really worth the price (if you have more money, put it into CPU, GPU, and screen upgrades first, then consider an SSD). Just watch for prices to come down and upgrade later.

I agree. 4GB should suffice for non-intensive tasks. 6GB are for those with more intense needs like gamers.

If you were running virtual machines or something you might need it, apart from that its a complete waste of money in my opinion. -
thanks everybody. I ordered XPS16 today with 4 GB RAM
