They should really update the BIOS to allow the OS to regulate the display brightness, this is a new feature added by Windows 7 (i.e. it can auto-dim the display after being idle for so much time). Its supported on my 4 year old Inspiron, yet not a brand new laptop.

These are two separate platforms. The BIOS is different, chipset and motherboard are completely different. No reason Dell will release BIOS updates for both because they're different. In the case of XPS 1640, it already has the latency audio problem fixed, if that's what this update corrects.

It does that on my 1640, running 7 Pro x64, so problem is on your end.

Dell Studio XPS 1640 is a completely different system than the XPS 1645. The only similarity is the case/appearance.

The 1645 doesn't allow dimming, and that's what this topic is covering.

I thought it would be up to the OS and all 7 installations would have it as eblockoptions 12 stated, you sure you don't have the option under Power Options > Change Plan Settings? Every single profile have it, not just the one installed by Dell Quickset. I would get out by old Inspiron 6000 with 7 Home Premium x86 on it to check, but I'm too lazy...
