What is the maximum amount of system memory I can throw into my XPS16? I have 4 GB in there now, however I thought when I built mine I could go up to 8. The reason I ask is because the system manual that came with my machine states that it can max out only at 4 (2x 2GB).

Dell offers a max of 8 GB on the SXPS 16 so that is probably the max. Do you really need any more than 4 GB?

I doubt you could even use up to 2gb, let alone 8.

Lol I turned off pagefiling, and when I play Crysis for a while, I get an error saying almost out of memory xD Normally only 1.25 GB is used.

Unless you are running your laptop as a server, either wise that's a waste of money for getting 8gb.

Well, I do a lot of audio editing using Pro Tools, so for now, since it is not 64bit compatible, I am stuck using Vista 32 and only using 3 GB. However in November, Pro Tools is slated to support it, and the more memory for audio recording, the better.

So I know both dimms are being used but now the question is if I buy a single 4gb to upgrade to 6gb total and I buy it from newegg, will that void my Dell warranty? Which company should I buy from.

Well I don't know what the maximum the chipset allows for is, but with DDR3 RAM there is the possibility for 16gig sticks of the stuff... not that it would be cheap or come out any time soon though

I have 6GB of RAM and I have used all of it a couple of times because I was multitasking and running intensive programs like AutoCAD and such. I wanted to up grade to 8 but Dell doesn't offer the upgrade and talking to them gets me no where. They do not understand their own system as I have to tell them that it can support 8 gigs. Anyhoo I wouldn't mind putting even more memory in here but I don't think the BIOS can handle the memory

I had 8GB in my 1340, and I used all of it with VMware and video conversion. Right now, I'm down to one stick as the other was bad, and 4GB is barely enough to get 3 RHEL VMs running at the same time doing what I do. Just because you don't have a use for it, doesn't mean others don't have a genuine need. :)

Pretty much all current Dell systems will support 8GB, so don't worry too much about it.

its upto you really I dont think it will void your warranty but they will only support the original amount of ram and if your going to 6 gig from 4 you will be running in Single channel not Dual channel because your not using two of the same amount of ram Sticks

Sorry, that's not correct. As long as there are 2 physical sticks, your memory will run in dual channel. If they're the same size, it is called synchronous dual channel, if they are different sizes, they are asynchronous dual channel. More RAM is always better than matching RAM. It won't void your warranty either.
