hey guys im looking to get one of the studio xps but im currently debating wether to go for the 13 or 16. portability is fairly essential but the prospect of having the 1080p screen really appeals to me.

    owners/users...

how do you find the 16 around the house and if you use it, at work or school, and moving it around, too and from these places.

i no its a desktop replacement and i no people will say look at the size and weight etc but i want feedback on real life use of it and how people find it.

i will be using it mostly at home in my lap, sitting on the sofa etc and at university in the library or desk in class so i was hoping to get the 13 but i really want that sexy 16inch screen so please provide feedback on your experience.

    thanks

if this is your main machine, the XPS 16 with the 1080P is the way to go. But if this machine is a companion machine, grab the XPS 1340.

this will be my main laptop but i have a pc, its a P4 3.6ghz with 2gb ram and xp, decent graphics card but its main use is just to be on 24/7 downloading stuff(legally of coruse) and both 13 and 16 will surpass it in terms of spec and performance

16" one I reckon.. The graphics card is much better if you intend to game abit, plus it isn't too big, so it's easy to carry around, etc.

I just switched from a 15.4" to this 16", they weigh about the same and are pretty much the same size, the last one was 16:10 and this is 16:9 so thats why I feel they are about the same, it is my main machine but it needed to be portable, this is very portable for a 16" IMO

I carry my 1640 with me every day. My previous laptop was a 15.4" Dell Latitude D820, which was a lot heavier than the 1640. The 1640 is a bit larger though, but luckily it still fits in a 15.4" bag.

I must say that I don't think that the Studio XPS (13 or 16) is the way to go for you, since you indicate that you will be using it on your lap as well. If that is the main intended use, then you should look at a different machine because it simply gets too hot to be using it on your lap for a prolonged period of time (even half an hour is too much). If you occasionally use it on your lap teh there shouldn't be a problem. I would definately recommend the 1640 in that case. It can replace you rcurrent machine and be your friend day and night. Use your current desktop machine as a server and use the 1640 for all the rest. Good luck deciding!

16" laptops are the best for all-round power, portability, and features IMO. Anything smaller strains the eyes and anything larger looks like a turd and is a pain to carry around.

I agree. If I had to choose again (and keeping mobility in mind), then I would take the 16 again. No doubt about it. Perhaps if I were a mobile user (using it on my lap a lot then I would consider having a slower processor in it (a P8600 for example) since it runs considerably cooler.

I had considered the 13" at one point for portability but decided for a similar price, why not get a better screen which a 16" can provide. Plus, I was reading the reviews for the 13" and they're not as close to consistent/good as the 16". The 16" also has the speakers flanking the keyboard =) feels spacy and less cluttered.

I actually don't think its big but that is personal of course, compared to my M1530 its only a bit bigger in width. I don't think its heavy, carried around in a proper bag its not that big of a deal. My little sister who has one for school says its not that heavy either nor a breeze to carry for her, but nothing compared to books in high-school.
