What was the average boot time you've tested when you first got your Studio XPS 16 with default settings and software that came pre-installed?

Also, don't forget to post the specs if they aren't in your sig...

There is a program that will compare boot times fairly in the Win 7 forum, I suggest using that and posting screen shots if you want to have similar comparisons.

Wow, really? I did a fresh install also and don't have really too much goin' on as far as start-up programs.... What all did you modify to get to that?

PS... I click start on the stop watch at the exact same time I press the button...

SSD's definitely make a difference, but I think the time is somewhat misleading. I was shocked when I seen 14 seconds too, especially when I haven't applied any tweaks. I am just using a regular clean install of Windows 7 (done two months ago) plus a few programs installed. There are some things to keep in miind though. This boot time doesn't include the BIOS boot time. Also, you can't really compare this time with your 'stopwatch' times since you don't know when the application really started and stopped.

Like sgogeta4 said, this is probably the best way to compare boot times fairly since it is more consistent in the way it calculates the time.

Oh OK, now your time makes sense, but the stopwatch time would be more helpful to know since I want to know how long it would take me to get the computer up and running for my work...

Maybe we can standardize the test to: from the moment you press the power button to the moment you are able press the windows start button with your mouse and display the start menu?

    EDIT

    Ran test under above^ standards.

    Best: 00:58
    Worst: 01:16

Best time = I d/c external hard drive, d/c network drives. Dunno if that actually helped. Correlation does not equal causation.

FYI my Dell Mini 9 boots completely in 23 seconds, from press of power button to start menu accessibility. Weird eh.

I received a 1645 as a replacement for my 1340 that had some issues. The 1340 initially had a bad panel switch, when that was replaced, the tech damaged the motherboard, wehen that was replaced the tech damaged the videocard, then the LCD went the tech then damaged the motherboard during replacement of the lcd and dell decided to replace the 1340. my 1645 has the 820 processor, 8 gb ram and a 320, 7200rpm hard drive running windows 7, same specs as my 1340 except for the processor. The boot time from when I press start till I can use programs ranges from 2'40" to 5 minutes, seem to hang between the loading windows screen and the logon screen then once logged on lags again till the desktop appears. Dell thinks it is a hard drive problem and is sending me a replacement re-imaged hard drive. I would be very happy with 40-50 second boot times. as posted in this forum.
