    This is my HWMonitor result:

Intel P9500 and Nvidia 9200m: Idle
    CPU: 33c (after 10 minutes)
    GPU: 63c (after 10 minutes)

Intel P9500 and Nvidia 9200m+9400m: Idle
    CPU: 37c (after 10 minutes)
    GPU: 68c (after 10 minutes)

This is my HWMonitor result after running Orthos Stress Prime 2004:

Intel P9500 and Nvidia 9200m: Full
    CPU: 67c (after 10 minutes)
    GPU: 84c (after 10 minutes)

Intel P9500 and Nvidia 9200m+9400m: Full
CPU: 78c or 172.4F (test cancelled after 5 minutes)
GPU: 95c or 203.0F (test cancelled after 5 minutes)

At full load, I can not sit with the computer in lap. Have other similar heat problems?

... I forgot to write that dell has changed motherboard and cooler in the laptop just because of heat problems but it has not changed anything.

Mine has idle temps similar to yours - a little lower on the GPU - but I'm pretty sure my max temps stay a fair bit lower. That's from testing with games/3DMark though, not Orthos Stress Prime.

I replaced the thermal paste on the CPU but that's all I've done.

Thats about the temp of my m1330. Nothing to worry about thow 100 c for cpu and 115 c for gpu is the threshhold

Intel P8400 and Nvidia 9200m+9400m: Running Orthos for 15 minutes
    CPU: 76c (both cores)
GPU: 81c (one card was slightly cooler)

After some CPU undervolting (1.025 V -> 0.9000 V), the CPU-temp went down to 68c running the same test.

Why is your GPU temperature going up so much with Orthos Prime?

    What are your gaming temps?

It's probably because on most Dell's, the heatsink is shared with the CPU so when the CPU heats up, the heatsink acts in reverse and heats the gpu up as well.

Also, the RAM is probably close to the GPU as well, which would also increase ambient temps for the GPU and thus raise the temperature.

You can always cool your temps down with a home-mad cooling pad. It's less than $10 and cools your system down. See my signature for a DIY :)

Are they still using a thermal pad between the GPU and heatsink?

I think it's so stupid that when the laptop is opened the vent is covered.

I'm not 100% sure about this but by the looks of it the vent on the XPS M1330 and 1550 has the same vent blocking issue.. Maybe an owner of one of these can take a look?

On Studio laptops, the design is similar, though there's a much bigger gap between the vent and the part of the screen blocking it on Studio notebooks.

Just had the processor replaced and it has made no change, the machine still hangs. Bios functions work (i.e brightness) but nothing else. Sounds like a design flaw to me.

The repeated freezing is not from heat. The OS install by dell has problems. During my first boot I got the safe mode screen, and I experienced crashing when I tried to access the device manager. Reinstalling Vista fixed the crashing problem for me.

I second what zakarydoks saying i had 3-4 lockups on boot when the system is coolest CPU 33 degrees and GPU 44 Degrees. Explain that ghost boxer being cased by overheating. I reinstalled Vista everything running with no problems what so ever.

Also Ghost boxer you should just stop going around posting design flaw. It would be a flaw if it was indeed a heat issue causing the lockups. The fact is its not Overheating causing system to lockup/crash. We all have the magical power of sight and thought and can see the vent being covered so yes its a bad design. I don't get why you feel so strongly to have everyone agree with you and call it a flaw.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that is your but could you just stop trolling every thread

Also if you go look at the Thermal Specification for the intel P its 105 Degrees:
    P8400
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLB3R
    P8600
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLB3S
    P9500
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLB4E
    P9600
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLGE6

p.s Don't bother with "you own it and will not admit it argument" i wont even humor you with a reply. :)

Well from what I saw, the lappy does get a little hotter than I would have liked, but certainly the freezing is not due to heat. I had the freeze thing 3-4 times , then I reinstalled vista , and it just froze once in 3 days, then later I installed Fedora 10 64bit and it never hung/frozen since I started using Fedora. So my guess is that 64bit Vista is a little unstable. I have 32bit Vista on a Dell Vostro and it never froze like the 64bit one does on Sxps 13.

In 1 week I've format this laptop more than 10 times. Why? Bcoz of BSOD. Have format the whole hard disk, including deleting the EISA partition. Just like other reviews, the problem is this laptop become too hot! But, for me, this is the second problem of mine. The first is, BSOD. I did try to install the driver according to the Driver Install Order. But it still give the BSOD. Ops, forgot to mention, I used all the latest driver on the website. The weird thing is, the cause of the problem is the GPU driver. Current version is 178.98, A05 (released date: 2 April 2009). Then I tried to use the previous versions. The BSOD still happen for 178.86, A04 (released date: 3 March 2009). No BSOD on 178.75, A03 (released date: 10 February 2009). Weird? Dell want to solve the heat problem by disabling one GPU (from 2), and its work, but the BSOD happen. Hope Dell test all the driver first before published in the website. I am really frustrated.

    Guys,
Anyone here have faced the same problem like me ? Pls help me. My current CPU temp. is 59c, GPU 64c. I know its still under the maximum threshold (for CPU, P8600), but I'm afraid it will not last long. I have Presario M2000 (Turion) that already 3 years old and still ticking. Dont want my new XPS 13 last for one year (as covered on my warranty).

My Studio XPS 13 has been working fine. I had crashes with the default install, but after reinstalling Vista I've had no problems. I've gamed on it, its gotten extremely hot but no BSODs.

I reformatted the computer and installed Vista, installed only the Dell drivers and basic dell apps (hybrid SLI app, and on-screen meters), and updated the BIOS to A04. After that I've had no problems (except in one case where the media keys stopped working, but that had a simple enough fix).

Although I did burn myself touching the vent area... it does get insanely hot.

I wouldn't blame the crashes on the heat... mine has not crashed yet after reformatting.

    Hi Xscorp1on,

I have just posted the drivers I've used forllowing a 32 bit Vista clean install on an SXPS 1340, see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4735984&postcount=2175.

Is this a similar Driver list and order as yours?

Can you tell me which Dell application you mean by 'on-screen meters'. I'm in the UK and i don't remember such an app.

    Thanks for your help

    Geoff

Yep, that's basically everything I used. The meters I'm talking about is the Dell System Software I think, where basically if you press the volume button, the on-screen meter will pop up and show you your volume, and same with brightness.

I went over your list and it look like it has everything:
chipset, ricoh, lan, wlan, video, sound, bluetooth, camera (the essentials)

Order doesn't really matter, but from habit I go from most essential to least.

Also, update your BIOS (to A04).

Assuming that heat has nothing to do with it, I've had a simliar issue.

My laptop is about 1 month old, but I've been fighting through multiple startup errors (been in an endless startup repair cycle), BSODs, etc. I did a Factory reset, issues leveled off a bit...but got another problem and needed 4 startup repair cycles just to get into Windows. Really scared that this computer is a lemon. Also, My hard drive activity light hasn't lit up once...probably busted - but minor compared to reinstalling. I've done every diagonistic...nothing came up.

Is this the same issue people are having?

It really would be nice to know how to force the fans to high speed.. I tried using fanspeed, and I8k with no luck being able to control the fans.

I run about 57-60 idle and 72-75 under load and about 3 degrees less than this when in power save mode

    Hi~

Recently got my 1340- within two days I had over twenty BSOD's. I got on dell chat support and they knew immediately what the problem was. There are three windows updates which are screwing up the OS on this machine. Support rep uninstalled these three and I've had NO BSOD's since.

    1) KB973879
    2) KB970653
    3) KB972036

some folks are reporting that a clean install of vista solves their problem, which makes sense- but as soon as they do a vista update the problem returns.

The laptop is still hotter than snot but it hasn't BS'd once since the fix. 'Hope this helps!

The fan is not covered unless you view at a extreme angle... Also, I have a 9 cell and it keeps the laptop much cooler due to the elevation and angle when using on a table. Might give that a try.

^^So I was viewing some pics online and appears some models of the XPS the fan is much higher then others. Is this true, because my fan is only covered when it is about past 100-110 degrees. Do the newer models have the fan placed lower?

    A slighty diff setuP:
    xps 1340 500gb 7200rpm p8600 2.4 processor 4gb ram, 9400M G
I also got a motherboard replacement due to random cpu overloat and slight heating problems, after the onsite tech left i decided to put AS5 thermal compound on cpu and 9400mG.... i only did it a few hours ago and temps will get slighty better with time as it solidifies.

    High Performace IDLE temps:
    both processing cores: 40 C
    gGpu: 49

same but now watching a dvd:

    both cores: 47/48 c

    gpu:56/57 c
