My Studio XPS 1340 runs just fine, it's not overheating or anything, but once in a while it randomly just beeps. I think it must be an internal buzzer, it sounds like it comes from the left hand side of the keyboard somewhere. It's not too big of a deal, but Id just like to know why it randomly does this.

it has to be some sort of hard ware problem. is the beeping coming for the speaker on the left or a seperate speaker under the keyboard?

It seems to be a separate speaker under the keyboard. The same speaker that beeps when you go the the BIOS. Hardware wise, everything seems to be working just fine, so I have no idea how to diagnose this.

That might be a software issue, seeing as I haven't heard of a problem like this before. You can either try and figure out what keeps doing it, or you can try a clean install. Both of which are quite time consuming, but I guess it depends on how annoying this really is.

has this issues been solved? I am having the same issue. I contacted dell support - booted the system in safe mode... DID NOT GET THE BEEP. Dell therefore concluded it is not hardware. I reloaded the OS - Win 7 ( upgraded) with reformat of hard disk and waited for several hours. The beep did not recur. I then proceeded to install Office 2007 and other software each time the beep did not occur after several hours of wait time. I waited overnight and re-booted the machine. Wham! - the beep started coming. Any ideas, any one?

I used to get a beeping noise like this in my SXPS 1640, but I think it was happening because the HDD was damaged (had to get it replaced a few months ago). Or, it might have been software related (hasn't happened since I formatted and installed Win7).

Dead on man :D The HDD has a built in freefall sensor that, when triggered, will dock the hard drive´s arm so that there is less possibility of damaging the plates on impact. At the same time, this sensor makes a beeping noise that comes from the hard drive itself.

You can do the test yourself if you want, with your computer turned on, move it up and down, it will beep if the fall is long enough.

I know this because my m1530 had the same issue, i would always come beeping all the way down the stairs because my hard drive would feel like if teh computer was on freefall.

BUT! if its just making that noise at random it could be that the sensor is going nuts, and this could affect your system´s performance. You may need a hard drive replacement.

I suspected it was the freefall sensor, but my new WD5000BEVT doesnt have any sort of accelerometer. Im guessing the SXPS13 has a built in one?

i really have no idea!!! the hard drive´s description says "hard drive w/ freefall sensor" so i would assume its on the HDD itself...

Nope, the WD5000BEVT does not have a built in freefall sensor.

Was this resolved? My XPS 1645 does this. It could be sitting on a desk not moving at all and beeps away. It's pretty sporadic and could be a single, double or triple beep.

Never found an answer to this. Usually when my SXPS beeps, it's because of some minor shock/movement. But occasionally (very rare) it might beep when sitting on the table doing nothing.

Im curious now as to if indeed there is an accelerometer on the SXPS laptops, then does it automatically park the heads of the drive to protect it?

I have exactly the same problem on my m1330. No idea why. Never figured it out; given up trying. It's infrequent enough to not really be an issue, but it does startle me sometimes.
