As many of you know, Dell uses a selection of display panels from different manufacturers on laptops, even if they are described by dell as being the exact same display when you ordered your laptop. For example, if you were going to order an XPS M1530 with a WSXGA+ resolution, you have about a 75% chance of getting a Samsung screen, and a 25% chance of getting an LG screen. (The samsung screen is usually very grainy, and the preferred LG screen has a great contrast ratio, is slightly brighter than the Samsung, and is perfectly clean with no grainyness). Dell pretty much builds your laptop with whatever screen they have left on the shelves.

The purpose of this survey is to find out which LCD panels are undesirable or have anything wrong with them, and which ones you should request when ordering your Studio XPS.

So please report your LCD panel name/brand, and give a short description of what you think of it.

In case you don't know how to find your LCD panel name, go to the "device manager", and expand "monitors". Then double-click on the "Generic PnP" monitor. Click on the "details" tab and change the Property box to "Hardware Id's", and then just copy and paste the ID it into your post.

I think I remember from the screen complaint threads of the past that some people did ask Dell to send them a certain screen type, not sure if they received it or not.

The M1530 also sometimes came with AUO screens. The Samsung screens for the M1530 haven't been grainy for the last few months either, but they're still quite low quality compared to the LG and AUO versions.

Doesn't the Studio XPS only come with LED screens anyway? I think most of the problems were with the standard screens.

LED or not LED, there can still be a huge difference in color quality, brightness, reflectiveness, and sometimes even weight of different display panels with the same backlight and resolution.

    Interesting thread.

If the device manager does not give all the info you can also use PC Wizard 2008 (free trial).

I believe the best 13" LED panel used in the Dell 1330 was Toshiba. I expect it will be used on Studio 13 too.

I am not sure the LG vs Samsung debacle applies to LED screens. And I don't think every Samsung screen is necessarily poor quality or grainy either. So comparing the two brands at this point is moot. As with any new machine I am always interested in what the hardware really is and its quality, but lets wait for those assessments to come in. Pre-notions of LG=Woot and Samsung=Bah on a brand new machine we know very little about is kinda lame. :\

I didn't say that Samsung screens are always worse than LG screens in every laptop, just the M1530 and M1330. I was just trying to give people the main idea of how some laptop displays will most likely be better than others even if ordered in the same system.

The ESD is 2/9/09 but the Dell rep that I ordered it from said it would actually arrive around 2/3/09 since I live near Texas where they build most of the Studio XPS's.

For some reason it still just doesn't seem like I bought the laptop... I just can't believe it lol. (I've been checking notebookreview, dell, and xpbargains every day for the last 6 months for deals)

Wierd... He told me that they build most of their laptops in Texas.

They ship most of it out of the Texas warehouse. They definitely do not build there.

Nothing wrong with this WLED screen on the 1340. It is a Samsung SAM01AE. I haven't seen anyone complain about either of the 1340 screens.

On the 1640 the standard screen is apparently fine but the RGBLED is oversaturated and has some issues. You could read the 1640 thread as suggested above, but maybe easier is this thread, which is about the screen only, with professional testing as well.
