My laptop is still having heat issues and they told me I could exchange the M1730 for a new XPS 16 with the 4670 and 1080P screen... he wouldn't tell me about the CPU or RAM though. So what do you guys think?

    EDIT:

    My system's specs:

    Core 2 Duo Merom T7800 (2.6GHz, 4Mb L2)
    2Gb 667MHz RAM
    2 Geforce 8700M GT's in SLI
    Ageia PhysX M100
    17" WUXGA

7800 GTX for a 4670? Well I would probably go for it.

No my current system has SLI 8700M GT's. This is a M1730 not my M170.

Depends on the specs of the M1730. If they are high enough I would try to get the M17x instead.

ah...ask for a M17x and see what they say. Just ask for a screen upgrade and the rest stock. That would be a great system.

Here's the rest of my current system's specs

CPU: T7800 Merom (2.6GHz Dual Core)
    RAM: 2GB 667MHz
    17" WUXGA (1920x1200)
GPU: Dual Nvidia 8700M GT's in SLI
    PhysX M100

If you were getting a Studio XPS, try to get the following Specs:

CPU: P8700 = 2.53 GHZ Processor, very energy efficient.
Ram: 2GB GDDR3 Ram (almost double the speed of your ram)
    16": Full HD RGB
GPU: 4670 with 1GB of course. It would probably be faster than the 8700m GT in SLI since quite a few games are not optimized for SLI graphic cards.

Ati does not have the PhysX thing, the CPU could do that fine though.

If it's for gaming purposes another SLI based system would be better. ;)

Yeah, I think I'll tell him I want a 17" screen. Because I mainly use my laptop for making/playing games. But would a low-end M17x be as good as a high-end XPS 16?

Just for gaming I would tend to believe that it would. The baseline graphics card in the M17x is a GTX 260m...which is quite a bit better than the 4670.

Hell, if I were you I would ask for specs for everything in the M17x to be at least equal or better than your current laptop (instead of just asking for the basic M17x) and I would be willing to pay the difference as long as it's not some over inflated rediculous price.

I've been looking at the XPS 16 with the 4670 and it runs a hell of alot better than my M1730 so I think I'm gonna take it.

Like others have said, ask for an M17x with a GTX 260m instead. It's vastly superior to the 4670. If you hate heat, you won't be happy with an SXPS 16. That thing turns into a furnace when gaming.

They have to give you something that is as good or better than your original computer, not worse. You have a 17" screen, and you want a 17" screen. You have dual graphics cards, you want something that can be documented to be just as powerful.

Now how many systems does Dell have that meet those two specs alone?

You need to be reasonable with your requests, but firm that you need certain specifications and you will not budge unless those specs are met.

I have already asked about the M17x but they told me they cannot replace a Dell for an Alienware (lies), but he said he'll get me the all the specs I choose, so thats sounds pretty good right? As long as the XPS 16 can play AOEIII, GOW, Halo 2, Half Life 2, and COD5 at highest settings I'll be very happy because my M1730 right now can't even run Halo 2 :( Oh, and I forgot to mention something this M1730 was a replacement for a M170.

IF you going to have your laptop for a lot of gaming i would stay with your M1730..............why dont you ask DELL for a new M1730 ??????

thats what they suppose to give you. (and with a bit of luck you get SLi 8800GTX on your new laptop (GTX 280 SLi will cost you way to much)

if you want a laptop who you can carrie around a lot, then Get SXPS

Hmm, the XPS 16 isn't designed for gaming - as you stated you used the laptop for mainly. It's design makes it bad at handling heat - if you thought m1730 has heat issues, just wait and see with the 16 -_-. As some others have stated, go with a m17/m15 from alienware.

well. i use my SXPS Ati 3670 for a lot of games....but im a hugh STEAM fan............so i have no troubles to play CSS, DOD, HL2 in Native on high + 4XAA on my RGB screen :)

BUT if i was you i should get a new M1730 with SLi 8800gtx then sell it, then buy a new SXPS + £500 in my pocket :) (thats the best choice)

I hate the M1730's design and they said they are completly out of parts for the M1730 so I do not want to keep my POS laptop. From what I've seen the XPS 16 plays games alot better than my M1730 and it's only 15/16" and I believe I will get a maxed out XPS 16, but if it has major heating issues I need to know. I asked the rep about the M17x Friday and he said they cannot switch companies (Which I know is a lie), and how good is a 260M? Is it a major increase? Because if it's not I'll like a 15/16" lappy instead.

Sorry for getting off topic, but is your M1730 under warranty? Have they replaced parts? Have you sent it in for repair? I'm asking this because I have a similar situation with extreme overheating (It's under warranty, they've replaced every single part, and a few days ago I convinced them that I should be allowed to send it in for complete repair, something not included in my warranty), but I'm wondering how you got to the point where they are willing to replace your whole laptop with a newer one. I haven't asked the reps yet if I could because they're doing a pretty great job at trying to fix it, but if you went through the same thing I'm going through now, I'd really love some advice.

I got the guy to approve the M17x with Dual SLI GPU's, 2.6GHz CPU, and a WUXGA screen. I'll post the full specs when I get them from Dell.com.

And to the guy above, I have Complete Care and I have sent my laptop in dozens of times for multiple failures. The M1730 GPU's are in backorder right now, thats how I got my replacement :)

Dell must have an overstock of T9600's. I had four replacement orders created before I got an acceptable system and they all had T9600's and my system only had a T8100

    @ Lweisenb,
Have you received your replacement systems? If so, approximately how many days after the order date did they ship?

    @Nonya,
How long did they say it would take your replacement to ship?(from the order date?)

I am still waiting for SXPS 1340 replacement that was approved on 9/10/2009, but keeps getting delayed and new orders being made and cancelled.

    Thanks in advance guys.

If you haven't figured it out already you are in for a nice surprise... the GPUs they set you up with are the 280Ms. So you made out considering you only had the 8700M SLI in the M1730 :) (Technically, you should've only been moved to the 260M SLI).

See you over in the AW Forums... Congrats!
