I ordered a Dell XPS M1530 last week and it's still in the processing stage. I've done a lot more reading and recently discovered that this laptop comes with a faulty GPU that dies.

Should I cancel my order now before it's too late and buy a differen laptop?

i assume ur speaking of the 8series with the defect that causes it to not handle heat to well. Personally, I wouldnt care. I know many people using the 8800mgtx and 8600, which are higher end versions. The only issue is that the heating and cooling which causes expansion isnt apparently good for watever parts they used. However, I have not heard of any actual failures yet. Plus, i think considering this has been known about, the newer cards were safe i thought. And lastly, it is dell, so they are a reputable company that you have a warranty under and wouldnt sell broken parts to you.

The one I ordered is 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce 8600M GT and I read it's the 8400-8600 that are having problems.

The defauly warranty comes with 1 year. What if after that 1 year, my thing has problems, I will have to pay to repair it.

If you intend to buy it, buy it with an extended warranty. The Nvidia 8series GPUs aren't ALL faulty, but you're playing russian roulette by buying one. The 8400m gs seems to be affected the most and in some laptops (ex. G1S) the 8600m gt is overheating (not all). However, overheating depends on how well the laptop is designed to dissipate heat, so your m1530 may turn out fine.

I'd say cancel and wait for a 9series card. It looks as if those don't suffer any major problems at the moment. A 2 year warranty is almost a must for laptops. It doesn't seem like Dell has refreshed their M line yet so sit tight.

Dell hasn't given details yet but they have already said they will take care of customers that have issues with their GPU beyond their normal warranty and according to nVidia they have changed their manufacturing process so the chips won't have this problem anymore. We just don't know if nVidia has really taken care of the problem like they said and if Dell is already putting the new chips in their laptops yet. This should probably be made a sticky since a new thread gets started about it every day or two.

With my XPS max temp I hit is 69 degrees celsius. The problem's only in rapid changing temperatures so don't turn it on and off like 50 times a day. Plus Dell "intends" to give warranties to people, and nVidia claims to be revising the card without the defects. The warranty will easily cover the problem. Also, Dell (Canada) will send you a new laptop while you're using your problematic one, and buy then you'll probably be sent a new one with a non-defective card anyway. Not many laptops are built like the XPS. The quality is incredible for such a good price. It only happens to have this card.. that'll be replaced anyway. I don't know about over there, but in Canada the customer service is pretty good. I got on the phone with them easily and they were very open to any replacements I needed (getting the Intel N instead of the Dell).

Just get it, you will be fine. Remember, this is a forum and you are bound to hear bad stories since people come here to either moan or ask for help with issues. Hence its a little biased!!
Iv been fine with every XPS Ive ever had.

Hey, I'm with the OP's here...The 1530 is an excellent machine. ;)

The point is..why worry so about something, that hasn't even happened ~ or better, that you don't know that it will happen all. :)
You just can't predict the future ;) :)

You already have the 1530 ordered, it's being built....you have 21 days to try it out, a 1 year warranty. And, you can still buy an extended warranty! :)

If you want to cancel, then maybe you should? But, personally (and thats my own opinion)..I would just let my 1530 order process, anticipate receiving it...and then enjoy it once I did receive it!

Then, if there were any problems going forward...deal with any issues with Dell ~ and they will work things out! ;) :)

    Hope that helps you!
    Good luck ~

    Cin ;) :)

Hey, how much do extended warranties cost if I only ordered a laptop with the 1 year warranty? can I get an extended warranty at the end of my first warranty?

just inquire about current price. At the End of first year warranty they will charge 20 to 25% extra. so if you can get 3 yeas when placing order. and be careful if your 1st year warranty get expired they may charge you 50% more too

as others have suggested, you should just get a long warranty, having that you know that if there is any problem its dell's problem, not yours, and the m1530 is an excellent machine, i give it 6 out of 5 stars ( if there was a way to do so lol)

so i say dont cancel, if there is any problem, you know your covered! ( by dell and by your buddies at notebookreview.com :D)

cheers and welcome to the family!

I never buy extended warranties. With all the stuff I buy even if my laptop took a dump, all the money I have saved over the years by not buying them would more than pay for a new one. I got the three year warranty on mine this time though because of my special EPP deal and I actually spent less getting it. I have had 4 Dell laptops, a Sony and an NEC like 14 years ago and never had a problem with any of them.
