Samsung HM251JI is my model number, 5400 RPM.

Rarely, 3 times a week that I've noticed, my harddrive (yes I'm positive it's my harddrive, I've researched quite a bit) makes a quit "beeping" sound. It occasionally has soft clicks and whatever, but this is a beep-like noise. It has been getting softer recently, but it's just one single and pretty quick beep that sounds like... maybe an electric toothbrush in tone, just higher pitched?

I don't noticed any performance drop AT ALL when it happens, and I don't think I'm doing anything in particular, it seems random. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar, and if there's a solution or fix.

    Thanks,
    Maus

Huh... well despite you saying that you know it is your harddrive I'm still not so sure that it isn't your motherboard dude... and in which case I don't think you should worry...

You probably know much more about computers than I do, but the sound comes directly from the bottom left corner of the palm rest.

Thanks, shoelace, and any other opinions are welcome.

Now I don't know about that, but that was just my guess. >.<

If it is your hard drive I'm not sure what you could do about those sounds, but as long as they don't affect performance and you don't mind them, I don't think there is much of a problem. XD

Same problem. My hard drive, also a samsung in an inspiron 1520 beeps from time to time too. About once to twice a week.
Intensity varies. Sometimes its quiet, other times much louder and quite shrill. If its on a hard surface notice it a lot more. Its from the drive and must be caused by something catching as its whirring round at 5400RPM though the tone is consistent. It could be a speaker inside the drive. One things for sure its followed by a soft click from the hard drive.

I'd check your SMART values using speedfan.
Go into smart and then online analysis and it will compare values to other identical hard discs. It says performance is 100%, fitness 0% for mine! And gives several warnings.
If your G sense rate is falling (it should be 100) then something is going wrong with your drive each time it happens. Quite how important G sense error is I'm not sure.

Mine is now to just 2% of original value. Reallocated sectors has dropped to 99% which is still OK. However as the drive fixes itself and automatically reallocates sectors, I've not noticed any errors or performance loss.
Activesmart predicted the drive would fail a month ago but still going strong.

Download Hutil from samsungs website and disable acoustic management. This reduces the number of clicks/beeps but they WILL still happen.

Try hibernating the PC. IF it beeps just before it turns off you have the same problem as me.

I'd back up any important data just incase the drive fails. Mine has been doing this for 3 months now and still working great, but how much longer for I have no idea.

I too have the same problem. I dont think its a defect and there is no reason to worry. Its kinda "parking" of the sensors is what I read.
