    Hi,

I have a sxps 1645 with those specs and a standard PA-3E 90 watt adapter:

    1 312-0950 9-cell Battery
    1 313-8545 HD AUDIO 2.0 with SRS
    1 313-8874 8X DVD+/-RW SLOT DRV, XPS1640
    1 317-2361 Intel CoreTM i7-720QM (1.6-2.8GHz 6M/8)
    1 317-2364 4GB,DDR3,1333MHZ,2 DIMM
    1 320-8331 15.6 945p HD+ WLED LCD, W/2.0 MP
    1 320-8350 ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
    1 341-8989 500GB HARD DRIVE,7200RPM,M1640
    1 430-0737 INTEL WIFI LINK 5300 802.11AGN

My problem is that after about an hour of play in battlefield 2142, (wich i had no problem running on my 2 years old dell inspiron 1501, that i got for 400$), the game stars to lag badly and it is unplayable. It seems to be a heat issue but my fan aren't even running at full speed. Is there any way to resolve this problem?

I find this unacceptable that a 1400$ laptop can't even run a game that a 400$ did without any problems. I've red about the throttling issue but that doesn't seem to be the problem because when I lower the brightness or put it on battery it doesn't change anything.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!

You should just read the posts here on the Dell forum.

You can't play games on the 1645 because of the throttle issue.

Our systems are worthless. You paid a lot less for yours than I did mine, so be happy...

Just review the threads that cover the power throttle topic.

    Enjoy the brick.

MrAceXPS you're being a bit histrionic aren't you? The system is not a brick, granted the laptop has a major throttling issue however it's only a problem under heavy CPU + GPU load. Plus I'm pretty sure while most people are pissed with Dell at the moment, the throttlestop workaround makes the XPS what it should be and it works great at that point...the total opposite of a brick.

I suppose I am acting out a bit... Possible buyers remorse because all these posts are getting to me... I also didn't get the major EDD discount, I paid $2495 for my system - tax in. I can configure a comparable Alienware for that price, with the lower i7 720 CPU.

You are correct though, it is a bit bulky... And heavy...

I only have a few days left to make up my mind on a return.

i would suggest op use realtemp to log/monitor his multipliers while gaming. Sounds like you are being throttled, and that program will tell you.

the program is explained here and this thread should help identify if you are bein throttled. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=446193

Thanks for your help and quick replies,

Today is my last day before I can get a refund on this laptop. I have some questions before I can decide if I return it or not. First of all, I really like my experience with this laptop besides the problems while playing games. I'm pretty sure my rep will send me a 130W adapter free of charges so that is no problem. But does the throttlestop and a 130W really solve the major slowdown problem? My laptop is also getting really hot after an hour of gameplay (bf2142) and I don't want this to be also part of the issue. In other words, will I be able to play games without any problems with throttlestop on and a 130W adapter?

Finally, do you think Dell will be able to solve the problem with a bios update? I called a technical support agent a few minutes ago and he said he wasn't aware of any widespread known problems with the 1645 (seems like lies to me) and that a bios update should solve my problem but he could not guarantee it... anyway I hope throttlestop and a 130W adapter make this thing reach its full potential because besides that I love it.

I will test my system using realtemp later today and keep you posted.

Also is there anyway to test throttlestop with a 90W adapter without damaging it?

    Thanks

@ MrAceXPS I know exactly what you mean lol that's how I felt...I'm getting over it now.

@Nicnad-Using throttlestop with a 90W adapter is not a good idea, there's a high risk of your computer trying to draw more than 90W which would probably fry the PSU and possibly damage your computer. That being said there are tweaks to use throttlestop and keep power draw within the 90W range, check out the thread atlstang mentioned to see specifics.
