Hi. My Studio XPS 1645 has specs as follows:

    Intel Core i7 820QM 1.73 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 (1 GB GDDR3)
    6GB DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz)
    500 GB 7,200 RPM HDD
    Slot Load Blu-Ray Read/Write
    Intel WiFI Link 5300 A/G/N

Anyway, my computer, after running for 1.5 hours-2 hours browsing the web and watching the occasional YouTube video, runs warm enough to remind me of my old Inspiron 8500, which cooked itself to death. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to keep it running cooler?

Get a laptop cooler. Makes a world of difference.

Also, if you dont have it, consider getting the 9 cell battery since it elevates it off the desk and allows better airflow.

download HWmonitor here: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Work on your computer while running this in the background and let us know the MAX temperatures for your processor and video card.

For a comparison I have a 720qm processor and 5730 video card. I am just being vague since my cpu and gpu temps are similar or very close(gpu usually a few degrees hotter) I idle between 55-60 C, with light usage(web/e-mail) 60-65 C, medium load (hd video/multitasking) 65-70 C and with heavy load (gaming) 75-85 C.

Wether or not you have a 9-cell battery will give you a variance of about 5 C in temperature, I have a 6-cell battery so that is why my load temp is so high...with a 9-cell battery when gaming I wouldn't be going over 80 C likely.

Okay thanks @wetcardboard, and @Jedis. I have the 9 cell battery, and am installing HW Monitor now. Will post results in the next day or so.

how did u get to view ur GPU temp in HWmonitor? I need to use GPU-Z and my temps never go past 78C according to it. I dont know how accurate that is though.

Get HW Monitor. 50 C is normal. To lower your temps, you can try
    - Cleaning out the fan (blowing dust or wiping it after taking it out)
    - Cleaning the backplate (where the holes are)
    - Getting rid of extra processes
    - Making sure no vents are blocked (bottom and back)
    - Getting a cooler

Think I'll make a thread about how to keep a laptop cool since so many are asking.

Okay here are my Max Temps:

    CPU:
    Core0: 68 C
    Core1: 70 C
    Core2: 70 C
    Core3: 74 C

    GPU: 65 C

    HDD Assembly: 44 C

This with all unnecessary processes closed.

I have just been sitting on the couch with the laptop on my lap (i have the 9 cell batt.) and browsing the web. Should it be this hot? Maybe I chose the wrong laptop, if it gets this warm from browsing the web, since I don't want to keep a book under it at all times....

thats not too bad. while gaming my gpu has reached 89 C and my 4 cpu cores hover in the mid 80s as well. Its a little hotter than it should be but thats just probably because its in your lap.

I would like to see how hot my GPU and CPU get if I could actually game for a decent amount of time without throttling.

If you are going to put your laptop on your lap, I would recommend putting the power option to powersaver. I find that my temps don't get high at all and I can do word processing and web browsing with ease. Give it a try.

I know, my problem is similar. My temps aren't in the "danger zone," but it is uncomfortable to hold my LAPtop on my LAP.

Okay. These are my MAX temps after cleaning out the laptop with a gas duster (heat sink and all, although there wasn't much dust), leaving it overnight in my 78 F (25-26 C) home on a granite counter top, and then browsing the web for 30 min this morning on battery power in Power Saver Mode.

    (degrees celcius)
    CPU:
    Core0: 54
    Core1: 53
    Core2: 54
    Core3: 54

    GPU: 55

    HDD:
    Assembly: 41
    Air Flow: 41

    Is this ok/normal?

Thanks to everyone, I was just concerned since the machine feels hot to the touch sometimes, and always very warm to the touch.

With a laptop packing the hardware the 1645's have expect it to always be warm to hot. It's not really meant to be using hard core on the lap.

I still laugh at the people who complain about it though... Only because I once had an older HP ZD8000 series with a desktop Prescott P4 in it. NOW THAT was HOT! If you know anything about the P4's you'll know the Prescott processors were and still are among (if not THE) the hottest running processors of all time. That thing heated up so much the entire base, palm rest and keyboard melted.. Even when I first started using it the keyboard keys would get "greasy" from the hard plastic coating getting soft lol.

I think heat varies on a laptop to laptop basis. I owned a ZD8000 with 3.0GHz P4, and I played games with it all the time on my lap. The 3 fans kept it quite comfortable, and even the keyboard and trackpad stayed much cooler than my XPS 1645 while under load. If it "melted," there was probably something wrong with it.

My 1640 has always run very hot. It doesn't bother me. If I'm watching TV in bed and putting the laptop in my lap, I just put it on a book so it gets some airflow and doesn't burn me. I keep a big textbook next to my bed for this purpose. And after several hours of gaming, the bottom is uncomfortable to the touch.

My old m1210 always ran very, very hot as well so I was unsurprised by the 1640's heat. I figured it was just a fact of life for a laptop like this.

Seriously, to all the people complaining about heat my old Acer laptop (in sig) feels hot and uncomfortable when I use it on my lap. The wrist pad gets warm/hot when using it only for browsing and web stuff, and looks at the craptastic specs on this thing :D

    Bump.

Just wanted to update, I got a lap-desk and I have been browsing, working on a powerpoint with outlook and tweetdeck active in the background:

    Core i7:
    Core0: 60 C
    Core1: 61 C
    Core2: 60 C
    Core3: 61 C

    ATI Mobility Radeon:
    56 C

    HDD:
    42 C

This is on a lap desk....with a 9 cell battery. Is the cooling system really this bad in this laptop?

I'm not trying to defend Dell, but what's the problem with those temps? It's not like the fan is working full blast to maintain those temperatures. Would you prefer the fan to be on maximum blast and getting temps of 35C/35C/30C?

Maybe it's just personal opinion, but I'd prefer a quiet laptop over a cool one. In fact I'd prefer temps of 80C on the CPU and GPU while web-browsing if the fan stayed 100% off and silent.

Those are actually quite average temps for your workload, and not hot by any means. If you have a lapdesk now, you should be good to go.

On mine, for a light load like internet surfing, with outlook and yahoo messenger open in the background, I usually run just below 55C on everything. That said I've removed the dust filter over my fan intake, and I replaced the stock paste with AS5. Still, 60C isn't bad for a medium load.

So with the laptop cooler that you guys recommend + removing dust protector = how much heat reduction? and does it make the hotspots on the surface of the comp (lower left specifically) much cooler as well?

My temps are (specs in sig)

Idle: just under 50 C for CPU, just under 49 C for GPU, and 26/51 C for ACPI
Gaming: Max of 70ish C everywhere

By gaming I run Crysis at 1920x1080 with most settings on High/Enthusiast and 0xAA. Removed my vents' mesh and have a cooler.

My temps are about the same, I'm running a game at 1080p atm, and the surface is just warm... not even warm... tepid.

My room is very cold atm. AC + a fan in the corner to circulate air.

Yes but barely. The palmrest is warm to the touch after prolonged gaming and the touchpad doesn't get hot like the 1640 anymore.

I have a 1645 (i5 540m, M Rad 4670) with a Zalman NC200 and my normal resting temps are between 36-40c. Browsing is about low 40's. Gaming the highest I have ever reached is 70c. Running Prime95 and Furmark the highest temp I recorded was 76c. I guess I have an abnormally cool system.
