Hello, this post is just to share my current experience with my Studio XPS 1640 screen replacement under warranty.
So, I have a 2 yr standard warranty, and I've been meaning to get my screen replaced due to some physical defects.
Dell Tech came over, nice guy, and replaced the screen. Physically, it is fine, but once we turned on the screen, at first, it was all red with a vertical streak! He unplugged and plugged the screen connector again, the red issue disappeared, but when the screen loaded Windows, white dots were flying across! That resolved on its own, but now the persisting problem is that some of the grays are messed up, and there are subtle lines rolling down certain colors head on (which are otherwise normally seen from extreme angles top and bottom).
Dell Tech was nice and called up Dell to ask for a new screen again, but of course, he has to come over again next week to replace it. I'm somewhat distressed about this, knowing that they're going to hand out refurb'd parts, and I'm praying this next screen won't have any defects. Right now I'm stuck with the defective screen until next week. In addition, I noticed that the screen's "whiteness" is slightly off-yellow, and my original WLED was a very bright clean white, even slightly on the bluer side.
Has anyone had to do this for their XPS 16 before? (screen replacement). What happens if for whatever unfortuante reason I get several defective screens in a row? Should I complain to Dell if this issue persists? What are my rights under the warranty for things like that? Thanks.
UPDATE: 8/2/2010
Same Dell tech guy came to visit again this morning! Replaced the screen, all the colors 'n all workin' fine now! Granted, I did a viewing angle test...it's slightly suboptimal compared to my original screen, but I think I'll get over that soon...otherwise, the screen is workin' good thusfar. Thank goodness b/c classes start in 1 week!
UPDATE: 8/2/2010 a few later...
I noticed the upper hinge, where the 2 'screws' are...are kind of loose and the plastic band that runs across the back of the lid is loose...great...
