What do you think of the resolution on a 16" notebook? Is it too high..? Dell's offering a 1600x900 version now; I'm wondering which to get

    Too high? No way!

The screen resolution is perfect. I would never go any lower than that, you lose the clarity and full benefit of the screen.

The screen is beautiful though I tend to zoom webpages to make it easier to read (the text is tiny). Some people don't mind but my vision isn't as good as it used to be.

    go for 1080

    it's awesome

the text will not be that too small

the screen is sharp and clear

with my old 19'' monitor at 1600x1200, the readability is horrible

but with the RGBLED screen the situation is absolutely different

you can lower the resolution if you want bt you will love 1080

That's because you wear glasses. For me zooming in webpages reduces eye strain and it's easier to read when I have the laptop sitting on the table.

The 1080p screen is beautiful. I at first worried it might be too high a resolution for me, coming from a 1680x1050 15.4", but this hasn't proved to be the case. I really couldn't imagine using a lower resolution on this laptop now. I guess it comes down to if you plan to just play games or if you want a multi-media experience, 900p would be better for the former and 1080p better for the latter.

i got it too (RGB) , and must say it was a tiny bit too small for my taste, BUT then i changed the DPI-settings of windows (works both in vista+xp) and for firefox the "noSqint" plugin (which fixes a set zoomlevel for all websites) and now its PERFECT!

go and enjoy the best notebook screen available!!!

even without glasses it is no pain for me to read texts.
I guess it comes down to preferences of everyone but you can always adjust settings in windows and make it best suited for yoursef.

in the setup guide it claims:
Horizontal: +-65 deg. min for RGBLED
Vertical: +- 45 deg. min for both RGBLED and WLED

I pretty much agree with these values, the screen has a great viewing angle, good enough for me. ;)

I love the 1080p screen, allows me to do a lot more work at once and the colour is great! I wouldn't sacrifice it for the 4670 though.

I received my XPS 16 last week. Its a great product.

However, the WLED full HD resolution 1920 x 1080 makes everything very tiny resulting in tired straineous eyes after a prolonged usage. This is something i am worried about because i will use this laptop for my design work.

I tried to change the display settings to lower res but the display became blurry although everything is bigger. Is there any setting to make sure the text and images maintain its sharpness? What is the best lower resolution? Any idea?

you should be running it in 1920X 1200 and adjusting the DPI to what ever you want

DPI Scaling has significantly improved, and Windows 7 is the best version yet, with more DPI aware apps. That said, it's not prefect, but honestly the 1640 wouldn't be special without that RGBLED screen.

You should adjust the DPI settings.
Do this by right click the Desktop / Properties / settings tab, click "advanced"
and there u can change the dpi settings.

after that it's a good thing to enable "ClearType",

do this by Right click the Desktop / Properties / Appearance tab , click on "effects" and enable "ClearType".

    Voila.

As for Firefox i recommend the "NoSquint" Plugin, which sets a permanent zoom to all Websites.
