Has anyone successfully charged an iPod (Touch, specifically) via the Powershare USB port, while the laptop was turned off. When I plugged my iPod Touch, it powers on but doesn't charge.

The manual that comes with the SXPS says some devices won't charge and some will. Wonder why...

I know it's out of the topic, but does the SXPS 13 also have a USB powershare?

Powershare does not support these devices. Presumably because they consume more power than the allowed limit.

I doubt it's because of the output, it's just that apple will want you to use their chargers only so will have made it so the data pins have to be working. For all your iphone knows, it's charging from a third party usb to wall adapter

What's the difference? A standard USB port charges the iPhone when the laptop is turned on (at least the USB ports in my XPS 16 do). So, why not when the computer is OFF, and the PowerShare port is providing juice? A USB port is fairly simple--4 pins and only two of them are for power. It can't get much simpler. Either those two pins have power or they don't.

My Samsung i760 Windows Mobile PDA phone charges from the PowerShare port when the XPS 16 is turned off. Certainly, the Samsung uses AT LEAST the same power charging the i760 as the iPhone would need.

    It just doesn't make sense.

I dunno, maybe the internals have a limit on the power output when the laptop is off. I found this odd too, since my iPhone won't charge but my friend's BlackBerry would.

Yes, let me sound stupid here. When I was plugging in my iPhone to the PowerShare port, it was at 100% charged, but wouldn't change the battery icon to the one with a little plug symbol.

I left it plugged into my OFF XPS 16, and as soon as the battery dropped to 99% on the iPhone, it beeped, turned on, and showed the battery charging and then went to 100% soon thereafter.

    So, I would say I'm OK. :)

That's not what I meant, your iphone probabyl has it so that it needs the data pins too to charge or else it might not be using apples special charger that they want you to soend money on if your normal one breaks. Basicly I get the idea it's apple trying to monopolise the market for chargers

Except for the fact that if you read post #9 by me, you'd see that it DOES charge the iPhone afterall...

Well, I would speculate that it's different with the iPhone. Since each iPhone comes with a charger anyway, Apple did not bother to implement the "proprietary charging" on the iPhone.
