In the process of trying different nVidia GPU drivers I inadvertently uninstalled a bunch of other nVidia drivers from my SXPS 1340  . Managed to reinstall most of them, but I keep on getting an error looking for drivers for the SM Bus controller. Now all the advice on t'internet is that this is part of the chipset drivers, which I have reinstalled a number of times- all the other devices are fine now, but the SM Bus controller is still flagged up in the device manager.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers
    Kyle

I hate to say, but I agree with the internet: chipset drivers. :D

Have you tried using a driver cleaner? Uninstall the drivers through Program & Features, reboot in Safe Mode, use Driver Sweeper (my preference), reboot, install again.

OK, tried that- no joy- SM Bus controller still not installed.

When I uninstalled the drivers before cleaning I just chose the option to remove "all except display", then in Driver Sweeper in safe mode told it to clean the nVidia chipset and PhysX drivers. Thinking a system restore might be the way forward soon...

    Cheers

Have you tried manually installing the driver through the device manager using have Have Disk method?

Yep- it won't detect the driver. I tell it the folder the driver is in and it tells me it can't detect anything. It won't allow the selection of a specific file, which seems incredibly stupid to me.

Ooh, that's a good idea, Hawk.

I'll be honest. One time after I installed Windows, I had so much trouble with nVidia's chipset drivers. So much that I screwed it all and just reinstalled again, lol. Somehow, I got it right the second time.

EDIT: Well, damn it. Tried using the driver's from Dell's site?

Yes, I can't find any other than the Dell ones for this chipset (MCP79).

OK, this appears to have been solved- downloaded an older version of the Dell drivers from another site- this did contain the SM Bus controller drivers. I'm pretty sure this is an error on the part of Dell/nVidia as the most up to date drivers don't list it when you choose which components you want to install, whereas the older version did.

I'll need to make sure I don't do that again

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

By the way, the official NVIDIA drivers work just as well:
    NVIDIA.com->Download drivers->nForce->nForce series 7->nForce 730i/Geforce 9300/9400M->Driver->OS of your choice->language of your choice->download

You should get the 15.49 (as of writing) with all drivers included. You can unpack the archive or use the included installer. (Currently using these drivers on my XPS 13 and Win7 x64)

That's nice to know, thanks. I wasn't sure if it was covered by the nForce drivers since all I had was the MCP79 code.
