The Dell backup disk is just an image with all the bloatware installed, you'd get the same thing by restoring from the recovery partition. If you want a copy of the OS DVD, just download it from microsoft. Windows 7 ISO x86 and x64 Official Direct Download Links (Ultimate, Professional and Home Premium) My Digital Life

Yes, unless you want all the 'bloatware'.

Pretty much, note that you will have to call up Microsoft to activate, as the OEM keys on the Dell laptops don't allow internet activation, but it's not really a big deal, it only takes about 5 minutes.

    Cool, thanks for your help.
I have done a few phone activations before, it's pretty straight forward.

    Cheers!

Get KeyFinder and run it. It will give you the actual Dell OEM key.

Thanks, but wouldn't it be the same key located at the bottom of the laptop?
In which case, it'd be much easier to access :p

2-3k on a laptop and Dell can be bothered with a 50 cent disk... for shame

2-3k, lol. These are about half that. Also, do you think any other manufacturer is any different? They all come with bloatware preinstalled on their OS disks.

you can request ONE straight from Dell. it will consist of 2-3 different disks. One is JUST the o/s, another is drivers, and the last would be the bloatware or crappy programs (i.e. low level roxio, etc..) follow this link HERE. i requested it via phone and via email for a different computer and both were sent via OVERNIGHT shipping.

No, OEM installs from the official Dell disc all use the same product/activation key. The trick is that Windows looks for a special entry in the bios that says this is a Dell laptop so this generic Dell key will activate.

Did anyone have problems getting backup discs through the following link?
    Dell - Support

When I submitted the form, a cs rep e-mailed me saying they won't ship the discs to me because my laptop was ordered to have no media included. I was told they only ship the discs to the customers who selected the media option when ordering.

So even if someone chose the media option (I just checked the Dell ordering site, but couldn't find the option), the system doesn't come with the discs and the customer has to go to the above site and submit a request?

When I got my Dell XPS I paid and requested a Windows 7 Professional disc I had the option. When my mother got her Dell Insperion desktop last year there was no option to request a disc. After she received her desktop I went to the Dell site and requested a OS restore disc and it came with a couple of other discs in two days. Last month her computer crashed bad and I had to reinstall Windows using the OS restore disc. It just installed Windows 7 Home Premium with none of the bloat and her computer has been running faster since.

No, you just got one of the clueless people calling you. Dell sends the discs with the computer if you order them in the order. That link is for those "having trouble and needing a Windows disc to fix the problem" and is offered ONCE per service tag. If you ordered discs with the system, they won't send you discs through that link presumably. Plenty of people who didn't order the discs got them through that link.
