I'm under the impression that the Studio XPS 1645 will be using a similar, if not identical, chassis to the 1640. Given that, how easy is it to replace the hard drive with a SSD?

I didn't bother with a SSD option on account of the price, but once the price comes down a bit I'm hoping to replace the drive and use the existing drive externally. How much of a headache is this and what should I be aware of with regard to known SSD issues, problematic brands, etc.

    Thanks for your help :)

It shouldn't be hard at all, you buy an 2.5" enclosure for your HD so you can use it externally and you just replace it with the SSD. Pretty easy.

IMO the best deal on a SSD was the upgrade to a Samsung 256GB for $200 over the 500GB 7200RPM drive. A new Intel 80GB drive would set you back even more than this (easily 25-50% more!) For storage, a 5400RPM drive would suffice. A 500GB drive can be had for $50. Either way, any new HDD/SSD you buy will have a very easy install, so don't worry.

When I went to configure it yesterday... maybe it was from Dell Canada?

Ya but can you really compare the Samsung to the Intel 2nd gen? Does the Samsung support TRIM? I've heard that the Intel performs much better, especially in the long run.

does not support trim at the moment however samsung is releasing firmware and its upto dell to release it to us lemme tell you the samsung is not a bad drive at all ppl keep complaining about it runs circles around any platter hard drive i ever had 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm and gb/$ ratio is not bad neither so i think its worth it i can reboot my laptop in 39 secs secs shutdown in 10 secs and boot in 25 secs also move files around instantly click on folders and they appear sometimes quicker than i imagined programs open snappy and helps in gaming
