I just reassigned the useless MediaDirect button on my m1330 to boot into Ubuntu instead. It works great, but the only thing is that it still displays the Media Direct splash screen right before loading GRUB, and it looks kind of sketchy that way :D . Is there any way to get change or get rid of the splash screen?

Do you get a longer battery life if you boot into Ubuntu and use it for say .. taking notes?
I can get about 3:50 out of the laptop using the 6 cell while inside Windows Vista taking notes.

I read somewhere that the Media Direct splash screen is built into the motherboard's BIOS.

The second thread is about Media Direct 2.0, but the part about the splash screen is probably true of the current version as well.

There's a great tutorial of it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=182495
Make sure you read the FAQs at the bottom of the first post before attempting, it'll save you time.

I haven't tried Ubuntu long enough to test out the battery quite yet. I do get about the same amount of time you get in Vista though (6-cell).

Shoot. If it's built into the BIOS, that means there's no way of changing it, right?

Short answer: yes, there is no way.
Long answer: there is no easy way, and it may even be illegal or void your warranty. The idea is to somehow disassemble the BIOS, replace the image, then reassemble and flash it.

Oh well, I won't bother with that then. It's not that big a deal at all, it just looks a bit sketchy when it says "MediaDirect" and then suddenly there's Linux!
