Where is this partition located? If it is located on the only hdd in my laptop and it goes to ****, my recovery partition will also - so whats the point?

That's correct. It's on your HD so if the HD fails you are SOL. It's designed to put you back to factory set up if you mess up your Windows OS. In other words your system will be the same as the day Dell shipped it to you. You will need to back up all your documents etc because they will all be overwritten when you use the recovery restore method.

To give yourself some completely separate backup capability get yourself a 8GB or so SD Card and setup a backup to it... It isn't huge but it could save that critical file if things go wonky on your main drive... I also subscribe to a internet based system called IBackup.com...
