Clearly 1080p is superior in terms of most graphic intensive programs. However my concern is with native resolution. Most of you know what that is, for example, if you try to play a game at 720p on a monitor that is 1080p, it will look awkward. Why would you want to play a game at a lower resolution than the native one? Obviously because some high end games perform horribly at high resolutions given our laptop specs. So the question is, would it make more sense to get the 720p if I expect to play games that are more playable at lower resolutions (ie. SC2) because I would be able to play it at its native resolution?

Not really. It'll be slightly blurry at worst. My bet is that 9 out of 10 people wouldn't even notice unless two screens were placed side-by-side.

Its just a matter of eye habit.
If you game alot in 1080p then the difference will be notciable on first impact, but give it an half hour and your eyes will just fit perfectly to 720p.
It happens for me when i switch from my desktop 1080p to my xps with a 1200p. You can notice the difference, but its nothing biggie.
Also, if you know what performance can erogate your laptop, i advice to get a proper native resolution panel adapted to its performance. Not all the laptops are capable to do 1200p or 1080p, and i guess that for 15" or lower 720p or even 900p is really fine, performance and quality-wise.

ok thanks for the tips. I've read quite alot of performance reviews on the xps 15 handling SC2 and the results were pretty dismal for sc2 running in 1080p even on medium settings=/

Oh with the gt435m I know it should handle 1080p relatively well. But would the gt420m paired with the i5 2.53ghz handle those games well at 1080p too?

I'm going to get an xps 15 tomorrow (hopefully) with the 720p screen (just found out about the 1080p option that used to be there) and if I must have a higher resolution I'll just hook it up to the 40" LCD in my room or another external display with a higher resolution available. I'm sure the GT435m will handle fine. Heck my 9800M GTS in my current laptop did pretty good with some games at that res.

As I said before I think the gt435m will handle with no problem. My concern was if the 420m paired with the intel i5 460m handle 1080p with ease as well?
