I am currently looking for a laptop for my dad.

I am thinking of picking up a display unit at staples,
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz) processor
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
    Memory Expandable to 4GB
120GB (5400 RPM) Serial-ATA (SATA) hard disk drive
    DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
    13.3" WXGA TrueLife™ Wide Display Glossy (1280x800)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 integrated graphics
    Built-in Dell Wireless Bluetooth capability
    2.0 Megapixel Integrated Webcam
    Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    Dimensions 1.3 x 12.51 x 9.3
    Battery Type Lithium ion 2.5hrs
    1 year warranty
    $550

    My question is
    1) Is the battery life accurate as stated there?
    2) Are there any major problems with the XPS?
    3) Anything else I should know about?

    Thx

That's a great price. I picked mine up for $650 at Staples on clearance a few weeks ago, new in the box. So $550 is a good price for the display unit, unless it's really scratched up.

With the money I had leftover from buying it on clearance, I upgraded the hard drive, memory, cpu and wireless card, and still came out cheaper than if I had bought it from Dell.

The battery life is accurate for average use and medium brightness on the LCD.

I bought that model a while back at $650 IIRC. The specs are accurate, the machine has been problem-free and I'd recommend it highly at that price.

One caution: you will have wrestle with Dell to get the warranty period set right. Dell will try to start the warranty period on the date it was SHIPPED to Staples, which is obviously wrong.
