    hello!

This is my concern. I had an xps m1530 for like a year until it died in december. i contacted dell and they are sending me a completely new computer for free. This is my concern. A while ago i decided to upgrade the computer's ram from 3gb to 4gm. So i bought 4gb of ram at new egg and replaced it myself. I sold the 3gb of ram that came with the computer. Changing the ram didnt waffect the computer at all and it was a long time ago. I am afraid that dell once they get my computer will say the warraty was voided because i did that or something like that. Do u think that will happen? what should i do???? Do u know if dell once they get the damaged computer go piece by piece to see i i changed them or something like that?? thanks a lot I would really appreciate your help.

Upgrading the memory does not void the warranty unless and during that upgrade you have cased physical damage to the system.

No it didnt, I changed the ram during september. the computer got damaged during december and was because of another reason. But i am afraid dell will asy it was related with changing the ram.

As said before - ungrading ram doesn't void warranty.

Personally if I was in your position, I'd play dumb and pretend that I knew nothing at all about computers -
"What's ram?" etc. when the service guy comes (assuming they send a service guy)

Assuming the computer died from something completely unrelated to the ram (like the motheboard/gpu burning out for example) then the ram in the laptop won't even be considered.

thanks. there is no techinician comming. the new computer comes next week and once i get it i have to ship back the old one. i am worried that once i ship the old computer to them they are going to look at it and then figure out i replaced the ram but since that isnt something that voids the warranty i feel better now. thanks

Is it a fully new system?

If so then merely take the new ram that comes in it - swap it for the 4GB thats in the old one.

yeah they are sending me a completely new system.

i went online to see the specs of the new one and it is better than the one i had before. the old one has a 2.6 processor (4mb). the new one has the 2.6 but with 6mb of cache. The then new one has 4 gb of ram, old one had 3gb. then they are also giving me a 1440 x .... LED screen, but before i had the 1680 x 1280 screen. that kind of sucks but having the better processor is better i guess. so if both computers have 4gb of ram i see no point of changing. I might just change it so they see its the ram they use. what do u think?

    Probably the best idea.
Realistically they're not going to check those sort of things against old records. So you should be grand.

Not quite sure about the screen res issue, it kinda sucks. You could always push for/demand the screen you had or better, but you'd have to spend even more time going back and forwards with customer service - Whether it'd be worth it though?.

What happened to your old one that they are giving you a new one instead of fixing the old one? I'd like to know since I've had 4 motherboard swaps, a screen swap, and the dvd drive swapped out. What's it take to get a new laptop out of Dell?

well my computer got static electricity inside of it and it messed up some piece of hardware. I called dell and they could figure out what the problem was so they decided to send me a new one. i guess open it up, charge yourself with some static electricity and touch the HD or the motherboard or one of those imporant parts.
