    Hi guys,

A pretty good deal on the dell xps 1645 came up recently and I was wondering whether i should buy it now or wait for any updates to the dell studio xps 16 in the summer. Do you guys think the studio xps 16 will have the ATI 5000 series graphics chip or new processor by summer time?

And as well, concerning the throttling problems on the 1645, I read that a new fix will come shortly. Is this confirmed?

    Thanks for your help. :D

I'm a 1645 owner and I'd recommend waiting. My laptop has had numerous independent problems. I'd give them some time to work out the issues.

I'm sending my 1645 back because of the throttle issues, so i'd say "wait/never"

    Do neither. Get 1647! :)
I ordered mine today, returning my 1645. Dual core is more in line with my needs/usage anyway. Plus better power consumption.

If you can wait you wait, if you can't wait you can't...simple. The longer you wait the more hardware you will get for the same or less amount of money. I have been wanting a new laptop since xmas 2008 and i'm really glad I didn't buy one back then. I would have wanted a new one by now because of all the new core i7 laptops, the better gpu's, and so on.

Pretty funny actually , i wait for dell 14z release in Aus, never happen
wait for dell studio 14,never happen, wait for nvidia ion netbook, lost interested, wait for 1340,shifty laptop lol hope they upgrade to arrandale platform and ditch 9400m and now i should wait for dell xps 1647 XD

Im thinking of getting the new asus g73 which will come out soon, but will surely wait to see what clevo will offer as well. It will depend on the looks and price between these 2. Maybe I'll even hold out till they bring decent non throtling core i 7 cpu's with more than 2 ghz for about 1500€ per laptop :p

    @pepper
The studio xps 16 series tend to overheat, so do the current asus G series. I'd suggest you wait for the new G series which will hopefully come out in februari and they will grant your wish by having an ati 5 series card ^^

I heard xps 1645 with core i7 overheat and have issue with the throttling, shouldn't xps 1647 have core i5 and have 10w lower TDP, do u reckon if i undervoltage the cpu ,will it keep the heat down?

That model overheats because they constructed it badly. When you open your screen it blocks the cooling fan, some models even get a decoloured orange screen because of that heat (only saw this with the xps 13 but it has the exactly same construction issue).

I'd rather go with a dell studio then, you'll have a weaker card, but alteast it won't burn...

It might be designed purposely to vent hot air vertically just like an airshaft.

Thanks for the responses guys. So with the bad design and many problems that studio xps 16 has, do you guys think there might be a model redesign for the studio xps laptops?

Don't really know , we need someone who already have their 1647 or we could look up at the manual once it is published at dell website

Many were expecting that Dell will come up with revised SXPS series with redesign to solve the heat issue at CES 2010. But we did not hear anything from Dell.
