I am having a really annoying problem with the Caps Lock key on my L702x's keyboard. It arrived earlier in the week, and this is the only niggle I have with it.

Whenever I press the caps lock key, the computer seems to change to another program that's either open on my taskbar, or if there isn't one open, send the current one to the back and bring things like the Windows gadgets to the foreground.

For example, I'm typing in this box now. There are no other programs open on the computer other than Google Chrome. I press Caps Lock. The Windows Media Centre gadget appears in the top-right, as it is on my desktop, and this text box is deselected. I have to click back on this text box to continue typing.

I tried opening Notepad and typing on there, and although it wasn't changing to another program or window, whenever I press Caps Lock the Notepad window flashes very quickly.

I'm not explaining this very well am I?

It's annoying me because I'm one of those people that taps Caps Lock very fast when I'm typing to put in capital letters. I've had to do this whole post using Shift, which I'm not used to! The number of times I've accidentally pressed Caps Lock and had to reselect the typing box

I wonder if its problems with a driver, or Chrome? I should mention that the problem is intermittent. It does not happen all of the time.

To fix the caps lock problem follow the instructions below exactly.

    1. While it is optional, back up your computer. A registry, again, is dangerous to mess around with if you don't know what you are doing. (not necessary just follow the instructions exactly and you have nothing to worry about)
    2. Press Start and click "Run..."
    3. When the dialog box opens, type "regedit" and press OK in order to open the registry editor.
    4. Open the My Computer folder if it isn't already and find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder. Open it.
    5. Find the Control Panel folder and open it.
    6. Find the Desktop entry and click it. The side window should reveal many keys to choose from.
    7. Find the ForegroundLockTimeout key and double-click it. A box should pop up.
    8. Change the current value to "30d40" (without the quotes.) MAKE SURE that the Base ratio box is set to Hexadecimal.
    9. Press OK and close the Registry Editor.
    10. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Thanks for the solution but there's still a little problem. It seems to only work for a little bit. After restarting a few times, I noticed that the problem happened again. The value periodically jumps back to "0" for some reason and I have to constantly change it back to "30d40."

Any reason why that is? =/

Nonetheless, it does work--thanks a lot for helping!

    Hello,

I have the same situation but on a Dell XPS 15 / L501X.

And I'm confused because in excel I have the scroll locked, and in the same time the value is correct in the registry. I understand that when restarting the PC it turns back to unlocked.

Do you have any idea of what is the source of the problem?

    Hey there,

I'm also having the same issue...I'm on a Dell Studio 1558, running Windows 7 Home Premium. After fixing the value in the registry and restarting, the error goes away. But after a certain period of time (often random) the Caps Lock key will start acting up again and deselect whatever window I'm typing on.

I'm not sure if this is related to the problem directly, but lately, I've noticed that the computer has been wanting to run random Disk Checks on startup...and whenever that happens (regardless of disk check running or not), the ForegroundLockTimeout value return to "0".

Hmm that's strange that it comes back - Once I did the registry fix I mentioned above the problem ceased completely.
