    Hi

I upgraded my M1530 to A11 bios a few days ago. Also had high temperatures, so I rolled back to A09. Still had slightly higher temperatures, but nothing big.

I read about the possibility to upgrade to 64 bit vista, so I got home premium 64 bit edition and started following the installation guides.

I already formatted the partition with media center and started the installation, and the computer shut down in the middle. I think its related to heat problems.

Did anyone encounter a similar problem? Whats my best move from this point (No OS installed etc)?

    Thanks

If you had no problem to run your old os before that mean you doens't have a heat problem! BTW What is your maximum temperature with your old os?

I think you should try to start again from media direct CD , format everything and reinstall vista 64 bit again to see if it happen again.

You can also check if something block your fan or put a fan near your lap just to make it cold until it finish install your os then use a software like HWmonitor to monitor your temperature so you can see if your computer have a heat issue or not. Good luck and keep us update

I was already working on getting a proper physical fan. Luckily it worked, so I have Vista 64bit home premium properly installed on my M1530. I installed the heat monitor to see if the levels are abnormal. What temperatures should I be expecting for a 2.40GHZ T8300 on A09 bios?

    OK, update time.

When I don't do much, the CPU cores at around 60-65 degrees, and the GPU is at 80C. (According to HWMonitor)

However, when I did do something a bit heavy (unzip a large archive), both CPU's reached 80 degrees, which sounds a bit dangerous to me.

What bothers me most is that I don't hear the fans running at that point. I read in a thread that SpeedFan is supposed to be able to control the fans, but when I load SpeedFan 4.37 (latest version) and go to configure->fans the list is empty (the two dual cores and 8600M are identified).

This is the SpeedFan initialization log :

    Win9x:NO 64Bit:YES GiveIO:NO SpeedFan:YES
    I/O properly initialized

Does this mean anything? Perhaps my fan isnt functioning?

80 Degrees while unzipping is incredibly hot.
Means that your heat dissipator is not working as it should
or the CPU is making too much contact with the dissipator/fan...
You should phone dell... and have that replaced...
    or, reapply thermal paste/grease/pads...
but having such high temperatures might have damaged more than something...
    key word: MIGHT.

    :)

I won't be able to contact dell in the next few weeks (not in the US currently)... Is there any guide for checking/fixing simple stuff by myself?

Already updated, SpeedFan and the likes still don't report fans. Does anyone know if this tool is known to be consistant (IE if I don't see my fans reported, the system really doesn't know about them)?

No, it means speedfan hasn't been coded to control them.
Your system does know the fan's there, its supplying power to it, if it wasn't your laptop would have melted down ages ago.

As far as I know none of the common fan control software works with the xps.
