try disablong transient multi monitor display from scheduled task (TMM). this is a useless program and wont cause any damage on disabling.
type task scheduler in start menu > Task scheduler local (left pane) > Microsoft > windows > mobile pc > right click TMM (right pane) > disable

Task Scheduler (Scheduled Tasks) can be found in the Control Panel applet. Although I don't believe you will find what he is referring to if you are running XP.

I'm running Vista on my 1530, so I'm not sure. I would start by messing with the POWER options. Unfortunately for you, XP is not a supported O/S (by Dell), so I doubt you will get any help from tech support once they find out you have XP installed.

Just out of curiosity, are you putting it to sleep, or letting it hibernate?

I have also had the same problem. I'm going to try and see if it's any 3rd party programs that are causing this to occur.

if you are using drivers from laptopvideo2go then probably thats the reason for your trouble

i have the same problem but it's ok because i really like the performance gain from swithcing to the custom forceware

oh btw i get the problem only when setting it to sleep and closing the lid at the same time

when i set it to hibernate i get no problems

Its the 180.x drivers that has this problem.

You can go to an older version and sleep should work fine.
