Hi, so i've got my PC plugged into a television set, a SONY KDL26M4000, and both video and audio work just fine. However, whenever i unplug the HDMI cable, the screen turns black and I only get audio. You can tell that it's still on from the glow, it's just that its completely blank. The computer's a little over a year old and I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate, along with an NVidia 8600M GT. Can anyone help?

Try pressing the function button and F8, this will switch between the main monitor and external monitor.

Let us know how you get on.

interesting new symptom. The problem goes away in Safe Mode and i can freely use my laptop w/o the HDMI cable. I've also tried changing the resolution and switching b/w dual screen and single screen in the Nvidia control panel, but that hasn't been successful either. It's almost as if it's stuck in dual screen mode.

Well, have you tried installing new graphic drivers? They are available from Nvidia here. Please ask if you don’t know how to do this or require further instruction.

Not sure if this would work... but try booting into safe mode, using the Run command, and typing: sfc/ scannow.

If this does not work then perhaps a re-install of Vista is on the cards?

It would most likely sort out your problem, as it may be caused by corrupt drivers etc.

Let us know how you get on!
