Edit: Is anyone running a Seagate 7200.4 in their M1530? Did the hard drive go in without a problem even without any firmware updates?

    Hey everyone,

I'm being confounded by a shut down issue with my M1530 and a new 7200.4 drive.

It is running A12 BIOS. With a brand new hard drive in, it is shutting down pretty much immediately after power on. I cannot format the drive, let alone install Vista or XP. It even shuts down if I'm looking at the BIOS setup. BIOS does show the correct data for the new hard drive.

Time from power on to shut down is variable. Funny thing is, I put my old hard drive in and there is no problem with running; I'm using it right now. The reason I'm swapping out is the intermittent noise of a soon to fail hard drive has started.

    Laptop: M1530
    old HDD: Seagate 7200.2 200gb w/ G sensor
    new HDD: Seagate 7200.4 250gb w/ G sensor
    BIOS: A12
BIOS changes from default settings: running ATA instead of AHCP as I run XP

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem? I'm missing my molex to sata adapter otherwise, so the earliest I can try an external format of the drive is tomorrow, and that is really the last thing I can think of to try. I've almost positive it is not overheating as I monitor the temperatures when I run it under load and just cleaned it out recently.

    Thanks in advance!
    Al

Sounds very odd indeed. Especially since you don't see this behavior with the old hard drive. My guess is its a hardware issue with the new drive and its shorting something causing a shut down. Is there anything in your Event Log pertaining to a hardware failure?

If you are still under warranty, contact Dell.

I have lost faith in Seagate since the clicking noise issue and other failure issues lately. My next HDD will either be Western Digital or Hitachi.
