Don't get me wrong; I love my new laptop. BUT the screen design will turn out to be a big mistake from Dell. I'm talking about the clear plastic filter in front of the actually LCD panel.

I notice that more and more dust particules managed to get in between the plastic filter and the panel. Right now, it's not a big problem. But you can easily imagine it will become one when, a year or two from now, sizeable amount of dust particules get stuck all over the screen.

With this kind of design, there must be very good isolation and I don't think the Studio XPS screen has that.

One of the Brazilian guys on this website posted a quick guide on how to remove that plastic face to get the dust out. It literally takes about 5 minutes to do. I know this isn't ideal but if dust becomes a problem, a solution is already available short of calling Dell to schedule a tech to do it for you.

Good to know that filter is removable. I hope it doesn't require detaching the panel from the laptop.

Would appreciate if anyone can find that thread with the guide to remote the plastic filter.

The post is in the main Studio XPS 1640 thread. He posted a youtube video showing how to do it so maybe if you search that you can locate it. It didn't involve detaching the panel at all. He wedged something in between the plastic cover and pulled on it slowly until it started releasing.

Search seems to be no longer available on this forum. But I found this video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0QaFujU5Us

I guess that's the one you were referring to.

It's not the ideal solution since you can't completely detach the filter which would allow you to clean the screen thoroughly but it's better than nothing. I guess that would be your last resort whenever the amount of dust becomes unbearable. Hope I won't have to do this anytime soon...

D'you think some third party manufacturer will ever make a replacement front bezel thing that is identical to the old one but without the clear plastic so we can live in peace? This would be a good invention, just unsnap the old one, snap on the new one and then you don't have to worry anymore, simply wipe the screen and have done with it

What I pray for is that this glossy fetich and filter craziness stop or at least all manufacturers offer matte options.

i am seriously considering this to remove a really bothersome dust particle at the screen center. the video shows the bezel simply unsnaps. has anyone else does this? i am mostly concerned with the quality of the re-sealed screen than with the removing of the glass.

id love for a tech to do this simply for the liability coverage if it went wrong, but i seriously doubt would authorize it.
