I got a Dell XPS 15 l521x and temperatures range from 55C to 83C which seems really high and that's with most services and processes turned off.

Everyone else have this problem too? I heard it's just bad design.
And why the fk would they put the fan in that tiny crevice below the screen and that horribly thermo-insulating silicone base. There's no way a normal fan cooling pad would help in the slightest and elevation barely helps because of the BS built in fan

Yes it does sound kind of high considering that I have an XPS 17 core i7. My temp readouts fluctuates anywhere from 45 43 46 47 using Core Temp. If you are using Speedfan, do yourself a favor and remove it because it tend to drive temperatures up.

I'm using realtemp. Does that do the same thing?

I'm not sure but if your temps are that high try Core Temp. The good thing about Core Temp is that you can program it to display automatically whenever your computer is turned on. But all this aside, have you checked the bottom fan cover on your system and make sure it is not blocked by dusts? My temps are low but I also did several things to it; like replacing the thermal grease with with Arctic Silver 5.
